Best ones I could give anyone

Change your electricity/ Gas / car insurance/ phone package every single year

Phone....go sim only on 30 day contract ...its much cheaper that paying for your phone package every month

Everything else....don't pay standard package for anything

It's so much cheaper to get the max discount by checking a website like Bonkers to do the comparison

You can save over a thousand a year

1. Pay yourself first. Second you get paid money goes into savings.

2. Batch cook

3. Save condiments/hotel toiletries for home use.

4. Use a “free” bank to save on fees

5. Change your utilities every year without fail. New customers get all the discounts. You’re considered a new customer after 18 months so you can go back to a previous supplier.

Local Co-ops can sometimes do good prices on fuel. Avoid takeaway when you can, a pizza is maybe 6 euro depending on your taste, a takeaway pizza could be double.

A really simple way of saving money if you lose your phone

Make sure you have a find your phone app switched on so you can log onto a friends phone to find it

Make sure you have the emergency number on your phone on the lock screen

If it's lost and found whoever finds it can ring the emergency number to help find you

Can save you having to replace your phone and credit cards

Minutes from Somewhere Else

No particular order, just what came to mind.

1. Make a budget. Stick to it. Review it regularly & update as necessary.

2. 50/30/20 rule.

3. Limit luxuries but don't go entirely without - you'll lose heart.

4. Shop at Lidl/Aldi. Great quality, variety & less expensive.

5. Favour quality when possible ("boot economics").

6. Limit going out. Pints are bloody expensive!

7. "Game-ify" your savings - set targets & hit them.

8. Shop around for better deals. Switch providers when you do find a better deal.

9. Make use of coupons/discounts/vouchers.

10. Limit meat intake & increase fruit/veg intake. Start with "Meat Free Monday".

I’ve switched my mortgage x3 times and availed of the free 3% tax cash back x3 times with each move…. Negotiate a better rate and while doing a mortgage is not fun when switching you’re not under a deadline and if you get a decent broker they will do the work for you…….. Avant also launched a new Tracker mortgage and Revolut. About to enter Irish mortgage market too… watch this space but substantial savings potentially to be made over lifetime……

Also over pay mortgage if you can… eg €250 extra pm goes off capital and if you find an over payment calculator online this extra payment can result in tens of thousands of savings over term (due to interest compounding)

review your protection needs you may be over covered or under covered companies like Royal London now price match via Brokers…. Do a review and potentially get more cover for less…..

Finally set up a good investment account… get any spare cash savings out of Bank/Credit Union… pay in even €100 pm and invest in stock market funds…. Get a financial advisor to help you… grows tax free and again growth and compounding over eg 10-15 year period builds up a substantial fund compared to savings accounts….. set a goal, kids college, pay off mortgage early etc….. if you get a pay rise in work use at minimum 50% to pay either into your pension (tax efficient) or use the net amount to increase savings or mortgage over payment……

Your future self will thank you x

Always do a search for discount codes before buying something online.

No spend week every couple months.

Eat from your freezer and presses, only buy essentials.

As said above, change providers every year or ring your current ones and ask for a better deal as you're thinking of switching to someone else.

I cut up old clothes and use as rags for cleaning rather than buying more cloths and kitchen paper. Fire them into the wash and go again.

Sim only plans or pay as you go depending on your needs.

If you're with Vodafone, download the app, they give loads of discount codes for different sites , days out cinema etc.

Plan your meals and make a list. Check for deals on meat and veg beforehand.

Make sure your children get a full time job when they leave school instead of going to university, especially one in England.

If they MUST go, make sure it's within walking distance of home.

If they MUST go to the GB mainland, once they leave, block them from contacting you on all platforms.

Sign up for one and pay for the month, cancel the subscription you still get the service for a month. Watch all on one service. Than alternate the services.

If you have revolut, set up a vault to save money in. You can divert a % of what you spend it adds up quick enough.

I moved all my banking to my credit union, set up a budget account , a certain amount comes out of my salary at source and into the budget account covers all my bills

What goes into my main account is my spending money. Best move I've made.

Buy your food in bulk when on sale and store it. You save money, beat inflation and have some supplies in case of a food shortage.

Leave your card at home and carry cash.

Many stores give away pallets, that's free firewood.

Take food with you when going to the beach, park, etc.. It will avoid you from buying it.

Make your own wine/mead, it's delicious, cheap and you know exactly what you're drinking. You can also infuse it with anything you like.

Heat 2 litres of milk until 80°C (or until it's hot to the touch), don't boil it! Put it in a bowl, let it cool for about 5 min, add one tbsp of natural yogurt, cover it and let it rest overnight inside your oven. You'll have a great yogurt next morning. Keep repeating the process.

Masturbate, don't pay for it

Mangrove Jacks is so simple to make.

Kit can be got for 30-50e and then the MJ pouches for about 30e.

Works out about 1e a pint for the first 3mths, then 80c a pint after that, as kit has paid for itself

Warning! You'll become a bit of a beer snob and be unable to drink a lot of what's served in average Irish pubs. You've been warned

I drive quite a bit, but always stop after 90 mins to stretch etc. I have cut out two coffees a day and often a scone or bar of chocolate.

Instant savings of nearly 100/week which I am putting to one side every week.

Make you own yoghurt - Lidl/Aldi sell the makers from time to time. One litre of milk makes one litre of yoghurt.

If you have good quality shoes, find a good old fashioned cobbler and get them re-soled, fixed etc

Challenge the car insurance renewal annually - a simple phone call can knock a substantial amount off the quote.

If you drive a lot for yourself, buy an older quality reliable diesel car and keep it serviced. Only use quality oil in engine, gearbox and differential.

Use a diesel card but shop around for best deals.

The saving in depreciation having an older car far exceeds the higher road tax etc. My 3k car now has 500k km. Depreciation on new or fresh cars is like having a mortgage and is a silent killer.

Staying on cars. My car tyre size is the same as many van tyre sizes. I use van tyres only now. Much longer lasting, higher weight load rating hence more plies and are almost 50% cheaper than the equivalent car version.

I don't and never will use low profile tyres, they wreck your suspension. Higher sidewall tyres are so much more comfortable and cheaper.

I only ever turn the heating on when actually in the house (live alone).

I dry all my laundry on a clothes horse - normally drawer dry within 24 hrs.

Shop around for broadband and phone bundles. I have two mobiles (work and private) plus broadband at home for less than what I was paying three years ago for just one phone.

Both phones are sim only.

I was looking to buy a new Apple tablet -new price was over 2k.

Happened to spot a one year old for sale locally for 1k. Got it checked out - perfect - and it came with a case and some extra software.

It is often the small weekly things that add up.

By reducing my coffee and nibbles intake, I am saving 1k/annum in after tax income and health wise, hopefully the better for it.

The biggest surprise is they aren't all from Cavan either.

With most of the better diesel cards you need to be doing a decent mileage. But any of them will give you a saving over the pump price.

However I have noticed the odd time that the local guy, who has always been competitive, beats the card price.

If you are in business, even for yourself, and VAT registered you can reclaim the Vat which at 23% is a big saving.

To raise cash..

End of day put one of each coin in your pocket into a a jar..

You've still got change for tomorrow..

You'll be surprised how quick jar fills..

Endd of the week I sort out the more valuable coins into another jar..

Over 100 by end of month..

I put all my change in a jar every night. Usually end up with €120 to €150 a month. This pays my electricity, heating oil , turf and firewood for the year and still money left over.

Biggest saving hack I have come across is overpaying your mortgage. No matter how little each month any amount you overpay comes off your capital so you can take years off your mortgage term. Granted you have to be able to afford doing so. Stop paying for showy things like flash cars and put the money into over you g your mortgage. You’ll see a massive difference in a few years

"Local Co-ops can sometimes do good prices on fuel. Avoid takeaway when you can, a pizza is maybe 6 euro depending on your taste, a takeaway pizza could be double. "

Price of groceries is mental. Our kids will only eat the goodfella or Chicago town frozen pizza which coat around 6 euro whereas out local chipper does a 12 inch margarita for 8 euro

I use chill for all my insurances as they tend to get the cheapest quotes and do a discount for multi policies

"No particular order, just what came to mind.

"

No.4 : we actually find Dunnes stores cheaper now for shopping esp with the vouchers you get for every 50 you spend

"I’ve switched my mortgage x3 times and availed of the free 3% tax cash back x3 times with each move….

Your future self will thank you x "

Have considered switching mortgage provider but thought we would incur legal fees?

Have to agree with you. As a single person it works out better for me to shop in Dunnes. Also find shelf life of foods is better than other shops.

I wouldn’t let that stop you. Cash back, lower rate… you should still be significantly on the plus territory.

Some banks cover fees but worth a calculation and solicitors sometimes charged less fee on a switcher. The property is already registered

Grocery shopping have budget in cash and that generally never spend it all. All coffee shops have loyalty card so if broke can grab coffee. Use revolute to save and use during the week and only put certain amount on it once a week.

Pay bills before do anything and still get a holiday each year. Stopped buying magazines and clothes.

Also just to add to this if you have had any insulation work or energy upgrades done on the house it may he worth getting a ber done. There is green mortgages available which tend to have a slightly lower interest rate
