What makes one a professional?

Some people put in their fab headings or bio etc "Professional" Couple or Man or Woman.

I notice that some take offence at that (personally it doesn't bother me much). But I am intrigued by what different fabbers understand by it.

One outlook could be as summarised:-

A professional is someone who belongs to a specific profession, works in a paid occupation rather than as a pastime, and meets the education and training standards required for their role. This includes individuals in fields like law, surveying, and skilled trades, as well as sports professionals such as boxers and athletes who compete as their primary occupation.

However as we all know, each group, couple or individual may have their own understanding, and therefore, their own reason for mentioning Prosional as part of their bio.

I am asking why do you mention it and if you get offended or not, why?

Well generally I read it as an individual that works and has a busy work life balance so sets the bar in relation to arranging meets etc. It also gives an indication of someone who isn't a slacker.

However, there are more and more 'professionals' in the industry appearing on here looking for business which is a shame as it ruins the sense of a like-minded community that we have on here.

Bleh. People can use it if they like. It doesn't make me any less interested as a potential Fab meet-uper whether they're working, not working, or what they work at.

I'm probably a "professional" by the definition above (as in, working in a skilled field I have a degree in) but it's not a word I've ever used or would feel the need to ever use. I'd never really discuss my qualifications/professional life unless it's brought up.

If I see it on someone's profile (either here or on dating apps) I take it to mean they won't meet anyone working class.

I'm sure my betters will be along to tell me my experience is wrong, that I have a chip on my shoulder, etc.

To me , anyone that gets paid is a professional, simple as.

If someone identifies as a professional that’s their choice and that’s okay.

A professional is someone who earns their living from doing something in which they have a soecific expertise or formal qualification.

I have difficulty in seeing what connection there could be between being a professional and being involved in the swing lifestyle.

I believe Medicine and the Law were considered to be the only professions. Anything else was a job. These days it's a lot more vague probably something you need a degree to do

I have to say I get "snobby' vibes when I see it. We all work, we are all important. I really don't see why anyone would put it on their profile.

Totally agree. I don't understand the point of stating that in a profile. Sort of makes me snigger. Then there's the next level; guys who include a stethoscope in their profile picture. Fecking tools!

I only ever took it as meaning works a 40hr week or more, only meets at weekends and doesn't have much time for unnecessary chit-chat and on-line frivolity.

I get sometimes messages like that, so I asked to show me a diploma for it 😁

To me life is a just one long lesson you learn something everyday so I can’t say I’m professional

Yeah exactly this - that's how I take it as well. Don't think ppl mean to be egotistical by using it or anything. Maybe ppl who take it that way may feel somewhat inferior in themselves or something

A 40 hour week with weekends off is pretty much the majority of workers. That makes almost everyone professional. Most choose not to put it on profile.

I'm surprised about the conjecture surrounding an innocuous word. Does the word professional really hold that much weight and worse still, seen as something to avoid when looking at a profile?

What I really mean is, just how many figures are they earning? 🤑😂

I would have always just assumed that it was to make clear they have a busy life with a job that takes up a lot of their time so they cannot meet at the drop of a hat and need to plan in advance

We had something similar happen to us the other day. We prefer if possible to have socials during school hours as we only get one night free and they said they could meet during the day due to being professionals. The reason we are able to meet during the day is because I have ms and hubby is my primary carer some days I've very little problems and some days I can't even get out of bed and I bed hubby would be more professional than those claiming to be lol he looks after me and the kids as well as dealing with his own health issues and he never complains about any of it and he still makes time to try and be active on here and arrange socials and meets for us as usually my brain fog means sometimes I can't even remember the day never mind anything else.

If I see it on a profile I would generally see it as them saying 9 - 5 Mon to fri job with 40 odd hours a week. I suppose it's a way of them saying when they would be most available.

In work I would regard it as someone who's qualified to be part of a specialised association usually with letters before or after their name due to qualifications or experience.

On here I would also see it as them suggesting that due to that association, they favour discretion over being open about the lifestyle.

I generally think it means something like solicitors, doctors, accountants etc that have "clients" who might take their business elsewhere or be judged by their own employers for being in the lifestyle.

As a professional myself, I believe people state it on here as they work in an institutional profession that can fire them for anything that institution deem to bring their institution into disrepute.

Looking through the comments is interesting. From "I don't care" to "they are knob heads” to ”I am professional and don't want my face seen” etc

While I know variations on the post have appeared previously, there seems to be know settled understanding of it. This leads to misunderstandings.

I think it would be good if one uses the phrase to explain what one means and if o e reads it, not to take offence assuming the worst.
