It's a long and drawn out process. Can be expensive also if not representing yourself.

Most people are not aware there is options such as a separation agreement and judicial separation instead of divorce, both can be a cheaper option not don't allow you to remarry. Below is a snippet from Courts.ie:

A separation agreement is where both spouses or partners agree on how they will live separately. It is an out-of-court agreement which means it is not set out by a judge.

Where both spouses cannot agree and want a judge to make a decision, they can apply for a judicial separation. This is a court order made by a judge setting out the terms by which both spouses will live separately. Neither a separation agreement or a judicial separation allow you to remarry.

I started with a DIY divorce, paid €1k to Separation Solutions, probably would have been fine if we agreed on everything but we had multiple properties, pensions, and children in the mix so it wasn’t going to work DIY. There was a divorce group organised through Meetup dot c0m. They had separation and divorce meetings ups all over Ireland.

I got a judicial separation in 2017 cost me a small fortune in solicitors fees but was ultimately worth it..I'm not bothered about getting a divorce cis I'll never remarry but if he wants one I'll happily do it and should b able to do it with minimal costs cos my kids are grown house pensions etc were all sorted in separation so nothing to sort out now

I've never liked unfinished business.

If you are in the mood for filling up forms, affidavits, civil bills sign and post all of them to the family circuit court .... But only if your ex doesn't contest the divorce, then you can use one of those online DIY divorce services for just a couple of hundred euro.

'Most' divorces are contested, IMO.

You are one of the lucky few if its not contested.

Everyone is entitled to do as they wish, in my case, I had a separation agreement signed by both of us. Then a few years later she wanted a divorce, she got legal aid and I paid for my side. It was well worth the money I paid. We met a few weeks before court at her invitation and it was sorted in a few hours. Two years later, legal aid came after me to pay her costs even though she made a contribution. Luckily I had used the services of a solicitor and barrister. Like I say, each to their own, my advice would be, seek legal advice as a rubber stamp and signature from a judge, doesn’t stop either side from going back to court in years to come.
