Far far away

I've decided to take the plunge and would love some advice.

How to find a good place?

Do l design myself what l want?

It's a very personal tattoo for me so ld like it to bespoke..is that possible.

Any ideas of prices. It's a a small one. Do they charge by time or size?

How to prepare? Where to chose? Thought so far are ankle, shoulder or behind ear, wrist.

All advice welcome

Hi Castello

Tattoo is a big decision to make.

Generally it’s good to have an idea of what you want. Final project however, should be of your artist doing. They know what is plausible, and what will looks good as a tattoo. Not all the projects translate well in to tattoos.

For your first one I wound advise you to stay away from your head. Many people cover their first tattoo after some time - head - even behind the ear - might be not the most comfortable spot for that.

Thought long and hard about my first tattoo,do your research and find someone who you feel comfortable with .They will advise you with designs and where to place them .It ain't cheap but it's a piece of art and should be valued as such imo .

It took me over 20 years to decide to get my first tattoo and in regards to your questions you need to decide a few things first colour or black/gray? Do your research and don't just pick a random tattoo artist each one has specialities so pick the one who will do the best job for your chosen tattoo. The artwork question if you are good at drawing then there's no reason why you can't draw it for them but make sure that you check who would own the artwork as if it's your design make sure that the artist won't do the same for someone else and as for cost a good tattooist will be booked for months in advance and usually it's about £100 per hour but that is just a general estimate you need to speak to the artist you pick and depending on the size you might get it sooner if he happens to have a cancellation. If we can be of anymore assistance please message us

I got my first one many years ago while d*unk. Only last Easter I decided to get more done. There is a few Facebook pages that you can look at to get a good idea of what you might like. This year I want to get a few lifestyle tattoos done. Some will hate them. Some might like them. But it’s something I want done. Pick something and think about it. Pick something that means something to you and will always mean something to you. I got my right hand covered. To me that was to show my ex that I’m taking my own life back. I got a rose done. To me that means I’ve been in a very dark place and couldn’t see no way out but I made it. I’ve a lion done. To me that means I will watch over and protect those that are in my world.

Took the plunge last year, I was terrified about the pain, but it's not painful at all. I got mine done with Good Trouble Ink in Dublin. Brilliant artists in there and it's a walk in . They designed mine for me and results were way above my expectations. Cost me 120 for a small one on my chest

Have a look at some artists on Instagram. Check if they have pics of healed work…they can look very different to fresh tattoos.

I got my first on my inner ankle…very few people notice it even though I wear dresses and skirts a lot but I see it daily. I don’t know why people get art on their backs where they can’t see it

Pick an artist, send them your idea and ask them to draw it up. Make sure you’re fully happy before they start tattooing.

I'd say have an idea, even examples, and let the artist design one from there. They know what there at and what flows nicely. I drew my first ones, which I like, but compared to the ones the tattoo artist did there is a big difference. For small I wouldn't be opposed to drawing my own, especially if it has meaning.

My advice would be find a style you like first, then an artist that is good in that style. Look at their work and reviews, and if you have an idea, print it, stick it up somewhere you'll have to see it everyday. You'll be sure you like it or not then hahaha.

Price wise, last time I was at one, I think the standard start was 60euro, the. It depends on time and what ink is used. There is also numbing cream you can buy beforehand now, didn't know this was a thing when I got mine hahaha. Best of luck with it though.

Hey OP, I see we're the same age, I got my first tat a couple of weeks ago and I'm thrilled with it. I had the idea for mine for years and actually seeing the tattoo artists work convinced me that they could do what I wanted. Most artists use a mechanical needle but mine is stick and poke which is a different experience and looks different too. When you know what you want you should give all the detail to the artist and see what they come back with. If you want more detail sure send me a message.

There's quite a few good artists in Dublin, met a few good artists on the tattoo convention last year. Tattoos are really personal and intimate, i have no tattoos yet but i have plans to get inked this year and more collections over time. The best way to start is something small and meaningful, depending on the connection you have to idea you need to look for a place where to put it. Decisions on where you getting the tattoo matters, do you want others to see and are open to share the story behind it, also depends on the skin and pain tolerance. Would be happy to direct you to some great artists if you are looking for portraits or something.

Goodluck x

Realism in well defined, black ink only.

I have a pencil drawing that I want reproduced as closely as possible.

Thank you all so much for your advice. Some great tips here. I've been thinking about it for a few years and with a big birthday on the way, thought it now or never.

Definitely look at different artists and see what resonates.

How to find a good place?

- My advice here is to go online and check if the tattoo shop has an online profile of some sort. Check their previous sessions, if they any pictures, comments, their protocols for hygiene etc. sometimes if you google the shop name and area you can get reviews from past clients from forums too.

Do l design myself what l want?

- You very much can, but if you’d like the artist to do it they can aswell. It’s better to find a design online, print it and hand it into them and go from there.

Any ideas of prices. It's a a small one. Do they charge by time or size?

- my local tattoo shop charges by size, area and the complexity of the tattoo. No same size tattoos are really the same from what I heard. I could be wrong though. I got a small tattoo on my right wrist it’s no more than 3 inches in length and one once in width and costed me 40e if that’s any help.

How to prepare? Where to chose? Thought so far are ankle, shoulder or behind ear, wrist.

- it’s entirely up to you where you’d like to get it. Since it’s a tattoo with personal meaning behind it, maybe somewhere you’ll always see it perhaps? But, you should get the final say on where it goes. Don’t let the tattoo artist, family member, friend, partner, or whoever tell you where it should go. It’s your tattoo, your skin and you’re the one paying for it.

Do what my friend did….they printed the tattoo on paper, cutted it out and placed it on their arm, leg to see where it looked best.

Also, just a heads up: I’m getting rid of all of mine (4 in total) and it’s extremely expensive. So make sure you like it lol
