Anyone else find people describing themselves as 'professional' a bit cringe or off putting?

Like are the rest of us mere mortals lower down the pecking order?

The bin man, the girl in Centra are all professionals too.

What exactly are they trying to say?

They obviously see themselves as somehow superior to a lot of other fabbers or am I reading too much into this?

A nice rock

Seems to be a common ick on here.

I think people are a little bit over sensitive to it, we all know what kind of jobs/careers were traditionally considered "professions" it's just a turn if phrase people are used to.

I've chatted to plenty people who had it on their profiles who didn't at all think of themselves as superior.

The hilarious irony on thread like this of people being incredibly judgemental of others because of a turn of phrase is always fun though

Most likely reading too much into it.

Answers will range from Notions to it being a way to communicate that they feel discretion is required because of their profession.

Or maybe they just don't meet people who wear tracksuits.

Or a way to signal social strata and a desire to meet similar.

We have professional in ours, we don't see ourselves as more superior. Like someone said it's a way of saying our jobs are quite public so we need to be guaranteed discretion. We are absolutely not full of our own importance. Reading too much into it IMO.

Why do people assume when someone says they're professional that they're snobby or work some high profile job. You've no idea what they do!

They could be a Solicitor, a barman, a carpenter, factory worker, an academic etc. and it doesn't mean they haven't got their head up their own hole!

Cambridge dictionary says professional "is a person who has a job that needs skill, education, or training" So that's applies to everyone who works be in bin man or solicitor or Tesco workers. At the brief time I had professional in my profile I was working in hospitality.

It’s just a word, I doubt people who have it on their profile gave it near as much analysis or thought as it has received here, doesn’t bother me, it’s their profile, what can put whatever they want, it neither attracts me or puts me off a person or profile, it suggest nothing about the profile to me.

We all have standards/filters/preferences, I haven’t gotten down to the nitty gritty of particular words in a profile triggering me or putting me off in any way.

Maybe they use it as a filter for people who don’t like the word or phrase…….

A couple who are both professionals just means both have a certain level of learning, specialised knowledge or advanced skills. They don't have to deal with the public, yes many do, it doesn't mean they are any more or less discrete or above or below anyone else. Everyone becomes equal when engaged in nookie. Maybe they just want to socialise with others in similar positions. Everyone here picks who they have as friends fab or not. Personally I wouldn't read anything into it.

I suppose people who use the word in their profile are filtering, trying to attract "people like us". What defines social class in Ireland? I've no idea, as we're all just a few generations off the farm, or abject poverty. The term professional is regularly used on UK fab profiles, but in their fairly well defined class system, everybody understands what it means.

"I would take it to mean that that basically wear clean clothes at work. I wouldn't read much more than that into it tbh. It wouldn't bother me one way or another. "

Actually they don't have to wear a suit or clean clothes. Some do 100%

So professionals are in 5 distinct categories.

1.White collar

Solicitors,accountants, ceo (etc) consultants, IT

2. Blue collar

Architect, crain ops, mechanics, electricians, maintenance tech

3. Clinical

Docs, nurses, therapists, social workers, lab techs, vets

4. Support

Pharmacy, engineers, revenue, medical industry

5. Management

Hr, operations, payroll, trainers, marketing

Some clean some not. So some have skills, knowledge and or training, not just higher level education but also real life. Takes all sorts to make our life work. Still don't think 1 person is above anyone else or should be. Just my 2 cents worth.

"Is almost a bad ppl saying they are "friendly and interesting". Like no one is gonna say "were door mat boring and very standoffish"

I've absolutely no issue with ppl using whatever language they want to put in their profile. I think it was the man called Bog that said its just a turn of phrase. If it irritates ppl then I'd probably just say, get over it.

The Monday blues are in full swing now so excuse me "

Lots of couples actually say "shy at first" and "quiet" etc as they are trying to truthfully describes themselves so people know what to expect. I've seen people say "friendly" but never saw a couple describe themselves as "interesting "

That's for others to decide
