somewhere

M50 at midnight when it's empty

But really the road from Cork to Kerry N71 is spectacular and I also love jumping in the car and driving over the mountains into Glendalough

It depends on the time of year, the weather and the mood. One of my favourite short stretches of road that I find myself on most years in May is the Marlbank Rd between Florencecourt and Blacklion. It runs around behind the Marble arch caves and by the entrance to the Cuilcagh boardwalk. It has some beautiful views but the main feature for me is the scent from the hawthorn bushes that are everywhere. If you get a nice day and can leave the window open as you drive it's just beautiful.

Alicante Spain, and Cork City Ireland

Too many to settle on just one!

Here's a small selection.

The Bear way Glengarrif Adrigole and all the way around to the Kerry, Kenmare side and back over the Caha Pass through the Cork and Kerry mountains again. But I could easily choose the Healy Pass too.

The Goats path ( yes you can drive to it) on the Sheeps head peninsula. Out from Drugs, Ahakista and back on the north side of it through Fionn Mac Cumhaills Seat, Galadoo and back to Bantry.

Further a field

One of the many roads out of Galway to Cong, wandering as far as Clifden and deciding wether to go back to Galway or off further past the cliffs, Kylemore Abby, and onto the Mayo side with Croagh Patrick and a back road through the Maamturk hills, Tourmackeeady by Lough Mask and back to the N17 where I used to Love Her Once in Tuam a long time ago

Honestly I could chose any part of the country and the memories are good and the driving is great

Galway

Following the coast from Galway to Clifden, through Screebe, Cill Ciaran, Carna, Roundstone, Ballyconneely and exploring the beaches along the way. And then back in through Letterfrack, Leenane, Maam and Oughterard

The kind of drive that fixes my brain when it’s addled…I need to do it again soon!
