I have been receiving a worrying amount of messages terribly written, in a way that's on the verge of getting incomprehensible.

No commas, no question marks, let alone bad grammar.

Sometimes it's even a turn off. What do you think?

I used to judge people in their spelling and grammar until I realised that it was very ableist. Sure it could be someone being lazy but they could also have dyslexia or left school early or English may not be their first language.

Text speak does annoy me ie dis, dat etc but I won’t judge people based on their spelling.

I can forgive bad spelling, but not using comas and full stops where a message is just one long sentence wrecks my head.

I try not to let it be a turn off for the reasons Jaffa pointed out but at the same time it can be a real indicator that the conversation is going to be like pulling teeth.

I have also received messages that are *only* punctuation. Very common to get a "???" if I don't respond quickly enough to some pushy chaser who thinks he's owed a ride.

I do find it a bit annoying and I get that people have varying levels of grammar but some are difficult to understand when there a just a lot of words in a row with no punctuation. Still better than Hey and a dick pic though

I noticed with a friend who uses voice to text that it often doesn't get the punctuation right. It could be that.

To be honest, there are a tonne of reasons why people might be misspelling, not punctuating, etc...

Lately my predictive texting has been such a pain in the hole, that I spend most times trying to correct it, then my writing.

On the other hand, of 100s of people I have reached out on this site, only ten-ish actually responded to me, so I kinda came to the conclusion that even though I keep my spelling and grammar up to scratch as I can for my own sake, it's not going to really open up many doors to fun and friendship here.

Again, the complaint about people being technically illiterate on this site comes around every so often as the other most beloved topic of single man profiles that are actually not single men, but cheaters, so...

*shrugs* meh...

I left school at 16. My reading and writing and ability to learn was so bad. So left to work with my hands. Started doing night class in late 20s to learn to write and read better. Unfortunately some words still get the better of me. Words like “The/They” me/my there/their to/too” seems to catch me out alot. When I’m writing I do have to really try hard to think of words and where full stops and the likes go. So please don’t judge people’s grammar. I kinda blame the education system back then. If you couldn’t read or write you were “slow or a thick cunt”.

I also left school at 16. I suppose if anything we are both proof that taking a little time and being intentional about how you communicate is what makes the difference.

Honestly to me this lifestyle is about accepting everyone that’s interested in the real lifestyle without judgment as such. Like no body shaming, no sexuality desires shaming, no culture shaming and so on. So why grammar shaming or judging someone that actually can’t do grammar a 100%. I’ve a friend. Never read a newspaper in his life because it fucks with his head. Doesn’t text much. Give that man an engine of a tractor and he can re build it. To me I’ll accept everyone that’s shows me respect in person. I don’t care if you walk with a limp or whatever or bad with grammar.

Same here, I don't have a problem with people's articulateness, as long as they're friendly, civil and respectful of boundaries.

I don't have a problem with people who have issues with punctuation either, if that's their boundary I respect that too.

Some of most pensive writers I know are the most shallow as far as respecting others go, what a paradox huh

Everyone is giving interesting PoVs. My point is, being a non-native English speaker, I cannot understand what actually people say if there's no cohesive and coherent line of thought and some minimal punctuation. I'm not talking about pristine grammar, I was talking about unintelligible messages.

Few words in that comment I definitely don’t understand. What is cohesive, coherent and pristine grammar. Near sure our dog had one of them and sadly he passed away. Thankfully peaceful. Oh the unintelligible thing. I recommend apple cider vinegar for that. Cured my gout

I think if they read your profile, they possibly don't think you pay much heed to either punctuation or grammar.

Might I suggest, if it is so important to you; put it on your profile. Maybe (put it in brackets).

Hopefully all these dreadful messages desist, I'm just here for the wet stuff, I don't care if you're dyslexic or have a stutter 😂....

The Op says she's not a native speaker, therefore I assume she learned at a time she was new in the country and eager to learn. Schools in the 70's, 80's and 90's were dour dark authoritarian places where if you got something wrong you were at best, berated, at worse physically punished!

I'm dyslexic and didn't find out till I left school, however I've managed to work through it. Very, very often, I get it wrong, but I get my point across.

I’m not native as well.

I learned your language after I landed on Irish soil.

It’s not about dyslexia, bad education system… it’s about showing that you care.

It’s annoying when someone doesn’t care enough to compose their message with more than just “hi”.

It’s annoying when all you get is a photo with not exactly clean toilet behind the person in the photo.

It’s annoying when you can’t understand a sentence because someone could not spared 30s to proofread their own messages.

„ fine feathers make fine birds”

No one judges your ability to type or spell… maybe some just don’t care enough? And before you explode with righteous anger- you know that the difference between someone who struggles and someone who doesn’t give a shit is palpable.

Peace and love beautiful people 🥰

I think 'txt spk' wrex my nuts.

Other than that, within reason I can accept poor grammar, but now when it's one neverending statement or question, or whatever it's supposed to be that you need 5 minutes to decipher.

Proofread, it's the little detail that can make a big difference.

Example 1- I helped my Uncle Jack off a horse.

I don't think I've ever received a message that I didn't get the gist of to be honest. OK, the content might need polishing. Grammatically it could be hit and miss, but the bones of it is there. I'm embarrassingly bad at maths, computer doesn't compute if you get me. It all gets muddled and I'd hate to be treated less worthy to talk to because of that. We all shine differently.
