Coming from a family of cyclists going back a couple of generations, I'm a bit of a cycling fan and like to get to local road races, crits, etc when I can. Obviously as a spectator - this arse wasn't built for a bike saddle 🤣

There's a game played in New Zealand (I was told), where you knock the cyclist over by opening the door as you pass in the car!

There's a part of me that hopes that's true and a part of me which would strap a bo..mb to a bike and send it in to the a full car park, in protest.

There are no cycle paths locally here.

Where should local road racers get their miles in?

Road tax was abolished in 1937. You pay Vehicle Tax, not road tax.

I'd rather they were on the road than the footpath 2 abreast is the safest way to travel if u have 10 out your only passing 5 instead of a long line of 10 as for cycle paths they are full of debris from the road maybe if they were maintained better it would be easier

I have no issues with cyclists being on the road. They have as much right as I do to use the roads. Yes some are annoying when you cannot pass them on country roads for miles and that has happened to me recently I was stuck behind a group for about 4 miles until I turned off. But I wouldn't wish harm on them even tho I did use some choice words to describe them while I was stuck behind them .

And wasn't there a cyclist killed a year or so ago when some young lads in a car hit him with a door as they were passing and thought it was funny and put it on social media. The cyclist was found in the ditch badly injured and passed away after as far as I can recall.

There's no such thing as road tax. You pay motor tax because your vehicle has an engine. Cyclists don't need too our engine is our healthy hearts. Plus, I'd guess 99.99% of cyclists pay taxes and are therefore entitled to use the roads like everyone else

If more people got out and cycled they’d be doing the health service a great bit of help. Great form of exercise and tones the legs and arse up. I’d say once or twice a month they slow me down for a few minutes, hardly the worst thing in the world to deal with. The social side of cycling clubs can’t be under valued either. People of all ages mingling. Older people having a support network also.

Those that get annoyed would get annoyed at anything so pay no attention to the sad bastards.

I don't cycle the coast road out of Galway because there's so much road rage towards the cycle club's it's genuinely dangerous with the trucks and cars squeezing past instead of waiting two minutes to pull out and pass correctly.

I do a loop on the back roads instead.

I've also discovered Community Bike Rides which is a really great organisation for people to get together and cycle. There's a great range of road bike groups who pedal to keep fit and mixed groups who like to potter along on whatever bike they gave at home.

They give free training on leading cycle groups for leaders and provide free insurance through Cycle Ireland

For a start, the bicycle was on a road ever before a motor vehicle was..

I’m guessing the majority of cyclists drive so pay road tax..

And to answer your quote about club cyclists..

Any person that cycles with a club has to have a cycling Ireland license which insures them to cycle on the road also..

Nothing wrong with cyclist's. But there does seem to be a hight % of them that are arse holes.

But in general these people are generally arse holes in life also and while behind the wheel.

While cyclists offen piss me off while I drive I do give them a wide berth when passing and wait behind them for a good time to pass.

As much as they annoy me it's not worth the guil (and possibly the jail sentence) knowing I killed or permanently changed someone's life for the worse all for just a little bit of a delay on the road.

But for the love of God if there is a bike path use the thing!

I have been almost hit head on by motorist on 2 separate occasions when they were overtaking cars. I was light up like a Christmas tree so they can't say they didn't see me. It wasn't until I got home I realised how close I was to being killed. Decided that it is safer to throw myself down a hill on a bike than being on the roads. There assholes and idiots in every walk of life but interesting idiots in cars tend to kill people while idiot cyclists cause a nusicance

Not Belfast but NI

I have no issues with cyclists. It is sometimes easier when they ride in small groups rather than single file as easier for overtaking in one go.

When I was working in Belfast and 'eventually' got the opportunity to overtake cyclists on the dual carriageway on my way to work, I learned to stop closer to the kerb at lights so they couldn't sneak by me again.

Sneaky I know 🤭

There's a very good reason for riding two abreast (and it almost always is, despite what drivers might think) - it makes them easier to see so they're less likely to be ploughed into from behind by a vehicle, and it forces drivers to give them more space when overtaking .

They're not being dicks for the hell of it, they're literally trying to protect themselves

3 abreast would completely block the road over the mountains so glad they only do 2

I understand the two abreast thing on narrowish roads. What I don't understand is the big pelaton where they can be 4 or 5 abreast. The other thing is they don't use cycle lanes where they are provided and they rarely stop at lights or pedestrian crossings.

The fact that they are the most vulnerable road users and are probably easiest hurt they do display an arrogance on the road one little tip from a car and it's all over.

I ride a bike now and again and don't have any issues with cyclists in general.

There will always be the odd idiot though.

My only issue is regarding cycle lanes.

A few years ago a 7 or 8 mile stretch of cycle lane near me was in poor condition.

Local cycle clubs wanted it upgraded so after some negotiation it was completely resurfaced and relined on the condition that the clubs used it.

In the 5 years or so since that happened I pass the club riders every Sunday morning and not one of them is using the cycle lane and every one of them is on the main road that runs parallel to it.

If there's 4 or 5 abreast in a peloton then it's likely a road race and the road should be closed (or it would be here). The only way to hold a road race is on the road 🤷‍♀️ but they don't happen all day every day.

One of our local cycling clubs holds a crit annually in town. The road closures are well advertised in advance and the diversions don't take anyone more than a minute or two out of their way. It's a great event that brings lots of people to the town. Once a year. In the evening time. And still the amount of people that grumble and complain about it is ridiculous 🙄

There is a big misconception on the rights wrongs and reasons for cyclist going side by side.

1. 2 a breast is the correct way to cycle. It mimicks a tractor or slow car in terms of space taken up, this encourages cars to treat them as an obstacle to be overtaken in the usual manner instead of buzzing them and clipping either them or an approaching vehicle.

2. If you have a groups of 6 cyclists single file as a car driver you will need to over take the equivalent of a bus length if they are 2 abreast then it's much shorter. Getting your car back o to the right side quicker thereby protecting you and your passengers.

3. As soon as the road straightens then the cyclists should of course switch to single file and take every opportunity to assist cars to pass.
