"It would be nice if cyclists from clubs who insist on using public roads when local government's spend millions on cycle paths had to pay road tax for using there vehicles on public roads " There are no cycle paths locally here. Where should local road racers get their miles in? Road tax was abolished in 1937. You pay Vehicle Tax, not road tax.

"There's a game played in New Zealand (I was told), where you knock the cyclist over by opening the door as you pass in the car! There's a part of me that hopes that's true and a part of me which would strap a bo..mb to a bike and send it in to the a full car park, in protest." madness every cyclist belongs to some one father mother brother sister etc how would you like it if it was one of yours?

"I literally live on a road where dozens of men on a sunday morning think that they're in the Tour De France and cycle past 2 abreast and head up the mountains I'd rather they were on the road than the footpath 2 abreast is the safest way to travel if u have 10 out your only passing 5 instead of a long line of 10 as for cycle paths they are full of debris from the road maybe if they were maintained better it would be easier Yes there's lots of videos online of scumbags opening the door of their car to knock over a cyclists even in Ireland "

They have as much right as I do to use the roads. Yes some are annoying when you cannot pass them on country roads for miles and that has happened to me recently I was stuck behind a group for about 4 miles until I turned off. But I wouldn't wish harm on them even tho I did use some choice words to describe them while I was stuck behind them . And wasn't there a cyclist killed a year or so ago when some young lads in a car hit him with a door as they were passing and thought it was funny and put it on social media. The cyclist was found in the ditch badly injured and passed away after as far as I can recall.

"Cyclists everybody loves us lol Anyone cycle on here ? What do you ride? Biggest accomplishment? Goals for 2025?" Big cyclist here and if more people did it it would be a better world. Cycling is the only mode of transport that has a positive effect on the nations coffers.

I was knocked off my bike by a van in a hit and run. Thrown into a ditch and left for dead. Hate to get heavy but I'm a son, father and husband. Makes me sad all this road rage because it's unnecessary at the end of the day

"It would be nice if cyclists from clubs who insist on using public roads when local government's spend millions on cycle paths had to pay road tax for using there vehicles on public roads " There's no such thing as road tax. You pay motor tax because your vehicle has an engine. Cyclists don't need too our engine is our healthy hearts. Plus, I'd guess 99.99% of cyclists pay taxes and are therefore entitled to use the roads like everyone else

If you are referring to lycra, we wear that so our skin doesn't get ripped off our bodies from the repetitive nature of moving the pedals and length of time you do that.

"It would be nice if cyclists from clubs who insist on using public roads when local government's spend millions on cycle paths had to pay road tax for using there vehicles on public roads " For a start, the bicycle was on a road ever before a motor vehicle was.. I’m guessing the majority of cyclists drive so pay road tax.. And to answer your quote about club cyclists.. Any person that cycles with a club has to have a cycling Ireland license which insures them to cycle on the road also.. Just saying

I was light up like a Christmas tree so they can't say they didn't see me. It wasn't until I got home I realised how close I was to being killed. Decided that it is safer to throw myself down a hill on a bike than being on the roads. There assholes and idiots in every walk of life but interesting idiots in cars tend to kill people while idiot cyclists cause a nusicance

They're not being dicks for the hell of it, they're literally trying to protect themselves

"I understand the two abreast thing on narrowish roads. What I don't understand is the big pelaton where they can be 4 or 5 abreast. The other thing is they don't use cycle lanes where they are provided and they rarely stop at lights or pedestrian crossings. The fact that they are the most vulnerable road users and are probably easiest hurt they do display an arrogance on the road one little tip from a car and it's all over. " If there's 4 or 5 abreast in a peloton then it's likely a road race and the road should be closed (or it would be here). The only way to hold a road race is on the road 🤷♀️ but they don't happen all day every day. One of our local cycling clubs holds a crit annually in town. The road closures are well advertised in advance and the diversions don't take anyone more than a minute or two out of their way. It's a great event that brings lots of people to the town. Once a year. In the evening time. And still the amount of people that grumble and complain about it is ridiculous 🙄

"I ride a bike now and again and don't have any issues with cyclists in general. There will always be the odd idiot though. My only issue is regarding cycle lanes. A few years ago a 7 or 8 mile stretch of cycle lane near me was in poor condition. Local cycle clubs wanted it upgraded so after some negotiation it was completely resurfaced and relined on the condition that the clubs used it. In the 5 years or so since that happened I pass the club riders every Sunday morning and not one of them is using the cycle lane and every one of them is on the main road that runs parallel to it. " I know one of the issues there was drainage and debris - not sure what that's like now after resurfacing

"I think alot of people who give out about cyclist should be made cycle a bike on our roads for a bit, that might change their perseption when they realise how vunerable you are on a bike" 100% agree. I’ve raced my bike for years. Sadly I’ve had many friends killed on the road while out cycling. The hatred expressed towards cyclists sometimes in unreal. People don’t see that we are someone mother, wife, sister, daughter etc. we don’t wear armour and at the end of the day we have no defence against a car (or even a car door as someone joked about).

No one in particular owns the road, they’re built for everyone’s use…

It mimicks a tractor or slow car in terms of space taken up, this encourages cars to treat them as an obstacle to be overtaken in the usual manner instead of buzzing them and clipping either them or an approaching vehicle. 2. If you have a groups of 6 cyclists single file as a car driver you will need to over take the equivalent of a bus length if they are 2 abreast then it's much shorter. Getting your car back o to the right side quicker thereby protecting you and your passengers. 3. As soon as the road straightens then the cyclists should of course switch to single file and take every opportunity to assist cars to pass. X
