Enjoying your own company...

Athlone

So! I find myself in Dublin for the night. Solo.

Spent the afternoon catching up with friends, then I attended a beautiful carol service and now I'm enjoying a bailey's whilst watching the world go by and I'm feeling as content as the day is long!

I'm a really sociable person and I thrive on company but more and more lately I'm happy to do my own thing at times too. A balance is always ideal.

Looking around, I am the only person on my own but it's not bothering me one iota.

I'm grateful that my head is in a good place cause if it wasn't I suppose it could be a different story.

Tell me your stories of being brave and not allowing the lack of available friends hols you back...

I've been to pdi and bergamo on my own

Good few nights away in hotels on my own.

Next year plan a trip back to pdi alone, 2 gigs on my own. Also thinking Edinburgh and faro on my own

Its feels strange at the start but now I love it

Meath / Dublin / Birmingham

I'm in the exact same boat, especially the past couple of years.

I'm also a very sociable person. I have a small group of mates. Most of them now are having kids and at other big life milestones and aren't around as much, understandably.

I've come to love my own company. I used to feel terribly awkward being seen doing stuff alone but it's the total opposite now.

Not much I love more than going for 3/4 pints by myself. I've gone to sports, gigs etc and for a spot of lunch/dinner on my own. Travelled abroad a couple of times alone. Lot to be said for sometimes just not having to keep up conversation or co-operate on making arrangements...

I go away on my own sometimes

Last year went to Vegas for 5 days on my own and had a fantastic time seeing a show The Beatles Love I'd waited 16 years to see as well as U2

Before covid I used to fly to a European city for a day trip on my own with a whole itinerary made out to take 12-15 hrs before flying back the same day

I love my own company ...never bored with it

But now I have an option and that's nice too

I love the freedom of travel on my own. To be able to follow my nose, do things my own way and take my time.

There are plenty of times for more social events. But I find if I get me time traveling, I am better for it, and better socially for the next while.

Hereabouts

I went to Portugal all on my owny-o for 6 days recently, with the main aim of seeing a band I love who never play here.

First time to do anything like that, it was scary but really rewarding, I was alone and yet, met loads of nice people while out and about so it was sociable too.

Far far away

I've done a lot of solo travelling in the past few years..initially it was daunting but it's actually quite confidence boosting. The only time l felt alone was the evenings as l liked the company and chat at dinner..tbh if l could find that travelling fwb would be great.

When I was young I used to wonder why my Mam loved heading away on her own for a night or 2. I was also perplexed when she got angry when she had a bath and I, all of a sudden decided I needed to have a poo. I thought at the time she loved the chats 🙈

Now I realise that 'me' time is amazing, I love being on my own for a while every now and then! I love being with my people most, but me time is very important too 😘

I've always enjoyed doing solo travelling, no one to mind and you just focus on your own "respite" doing whatever you feel like in the moment, no drama, not having to fulfill anyone's expectations, just work on yourself and savour the moment.

Think before covid I started appreciating those solo moments, reorganise thoughts and work on hobbies, best thing you can do at times

I am the opposite of you people, I love and need to be around others. I recently had a night home alone and I was hating it..

I couldn’t imagine going away solo as I’d end up being too indecisive about doing things and end up not doing anything. I need even one person with me and I’m brave!

Another solo traveller here, really enjoy it, bring a book and you are never truly alone.

Also, these days with apps, it's so easy to find a little company, if you want it. A solo beach holiday is no problem at all, there s always someone else available to hang out with.

Not Belfast but NI

I have always enjoyed my own company. In the past it was a rare luxury but now, with a bit of planning, it is becoming an important part of my life.

I live alone, I’ve fucked of family and some friends that were dragging me down. I’ve a very small circle of friends. I made it very clear. I don’t care how important anyone is to me, the minute someone makes it clear to me I’m not important to them they become a stranger to me. For me loyalty is everything. If someone can’t see my worth then they have no place in my life. I’m happy now at last. For 5 years or more I was a very sad lonely man. I don’t travel because I get bored but I was a long distance lorry driver and I’ve seen must country’s in Europe. A trip away for me is a walk in the mountain or a forest. Now can you imagine text some woman on here and asking her if she fancies a wee walk in the mountain of forest. I was a kinda hating the run up to Xmas day. I’ve always cooked the Xmas dinner. But this year my landlord is insisting on cooking my dinner for me.

I'm terrible for this. I always try and drag people along to stuff. I'm forcing myself to do some solo things in 2025

This is me too

I hate travelling so I don't, but enjoy taking myself for dinner

This week is pure bliss - own company and noone annoying me cos they're all busy

Raising a glass to you!

I've started doing solo city breaks, thought I would be self conscious dining out or visiting attractions, but I wasn't and thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Do my next one in the spring.

Sometimes, I like to drag people along...but most times, it's too much work.

Prior to covid, I couldn't do it on my own but since then, I'm my bestfriend. Traveling, drinking, eating...just being in the moment. These days, I can sit at home, decline outings, and just chill to re-energize.

I realize that while company is a gift, solitude has its own kind of magic. It’s a space where we can reconnect with ourselves, savor the moment, and even grow in confidence.

I went on hols for a week to Santorini by myself.

Didnt give a hoot. Im fine with my own company. But not many ppl spoke to me & it was out of season.

Decided not to put my life on hold. I have an incurable but not life threatening form of cancer. Full steam ahead on living my life 💞

I used to hate being on my own but after going to PDI three times on my own and going on caminos, where you can find someone to chat to easier than finding a single guy on fab! Now I would find it difficult to share ‘my time’ as it’s so important. I’m met some of the fellow posters above. I think I can chat with them over a coffee as if we saw each other only yesterday and enjoy their company as much as my wife circle of vanilla friends.

That’s not to say I don’t enjoy the company of an another person. Or I wouldnt look for a relationship. It’s just I have developed and understand and appreciate myself and my own time. So any new relationship would now be different.

Have a great Christmas and New Year OP and all the other commenters. Thanks for the post great for reflection on how we have become better in some ways.
