"gis a poke love"

..could get you a black eye in some places Was in that there London last week and fancied an ice cream, so (as you do) asked the young lady behind the counter for a poke.

Thought she was forrin and said it again rather loudly and then it dawned on me..

I did get my ice cream, but have vowed to remember some of our local sayings may not just be understood elsewhere

Anyone else manage to do that?

a poke??never heard an ice cream cone being called a poke?they used to call them cornets when i was a kid

normally a belfast saying no one from as far north as /city and south in newry so are you from belfast originaly @OP

Just outside it (Monkstown) But down here in the sticks there are a few that call them pokes - the people that run the genoa in warrenpoint (and Newry) were from belfast I think and they would call it that.
