Zero interest in cycling here it seems and there's the Green Party putting in more and more cycling lanes and building 5star bike sheds.

Lots of cyclists actually, sure don't you see them out and about every day. I like it myself, and greatly appreciate the government investing in making it safer to do, I'm just not into joining a group.

I'm also not in any cycling groups but glad to see plenty of investment in local cycling infrastructure. I'm out on the greenway plenty and swapping the car for the bike more and more for shorter trips as I can actually make certain journeys in better time with the state of traffic on some routes.

I was doing 40k cycles a few times a week up until earlier this year. Not so much into cycle clubs but I do join Community Bike rides occasionally and would encourage anyone who enjoys a chill cycle in the countryside to look it up.

Also a big fan of cycle lanes. There's a cycle bus with at least twenty kids in it on my side of them using those lanes. Love to see it.

Absolutely agree with this. Loads of cyclists here and I'm all for cycle lanes. Build it and they will come.

I do love cycling but prefer to cycle on my own as I can cycle on my own pace!! Also, weatherwise, it's been crap these days, bloody Irish weather!!

Are you using the evidence from lack of response to this post as a reason politicians should support cycling less? Or was “here” your local area?

Either way, pleased to see support for cycling!

Interesting. I’m in two minds. Goes without saying they have to be maintained to be safe at all. And some are so poorly designed - like when they come to a sudden stop, or involve wild chicanes! Many of the two-way lanes are somewhat narrow. There’s also the complicated issue of how they intersect with junctions. But still, we’re that bit further from those lethal machines one calls cars, and some of them are really useful, and probably encourage cycling.

Was in Barcelona with my bike recently - full of cycle lanes, designed really well, and respected by drivers. But they do have the advantage of wide-open roads and partial grid-style road pattern.

Massive fan of the idea.

I used to cycle all the time in oz, bought really nice bikes and even imported them, but I soon stopped riding here as infrastructure was really dangerous. It's nice to see a lot of cycle tracks be more protected than shared with bus lanes or littered with manholes these days, and a lot of connections being put in so there's longer stretches to get places. Have been trying to work out how I can get more cycling in these days and get that confidence back now it's starting to get a little safer.

..........

Should have said "on here" as my comment was prompted by the initial slow response to the thread.

I cycle for leisure myself, mostly on Greenways or quite country roads. Most cycle lanes I see in cities and towns remain empty for most of the day but I appreciate they are a help to those who use them to commute to work/school/college.

Politicians should focus on creating jobs, providing healthcare and housing.

Secondary facilities such as cycle lanes will follow on as a natural progression of a properly functioning, well run economy/society.

Get the basics right and the rest will follow.

Agree also but bike lanes are more for the commuter rather than the racer. All the crap from the roads get flung in there and there's no maintaining done. I'd only cycle in there with a mountain bike or a commuter bike. My racer stays on the road.

It's still very important to have them regardless of condition

Completely agree. Got knocked off my bike by a white van driver and hurled into a ditch. He drove on like I was road kill. Took me 3 years to get the confidence to go back out. I now however drive to rural location which defeats to point to a degree. I'm sure I'll get my full confidence back sometime.

But that's what's helping me. Get myself to an isolated area and hit the road for 2 or 3 hours on my bike away from cars for the most part

I pretty much only cycle on loop's around rural back roads if I want to do a few hours. I'd love to be able to cycle the coast road from Galway towards Connemara but it's crazy dangerous because the road is narrow, there's no passing and drivers in a rush are mental.

Yes, if there was a decent split between sexes and it’s in my area. So in practice, probably not…

playa de ingles / outa da west

No problem at all with cyclists 🚴‍♀️ and cycle myself

Cyclists complain about being cut off by motorists which has happened on occasion to me

But some cyclists seem to have no respect for motorists ie when traffic approaches from behind go into single file and allow traffic manoeuvre out past whilst it’s safe to do so

NOT hold it up for ages there in double file cycling along the road

Let it be a group or just a couple

Single file for a moment and everyone is happy and no aggression or accidents

Give a little respect to motorists and you get it back

Most cyclists are drivers too .

Use cycle lanes where provided and it’s safer

Nothing as off pissing is a cyclist or cyclists using the road and good cycle lanes along side them

Everyone has equal rights using the road so do so accordingly and respect each other and it’s a win win for all

I love cycling , where I live in Ballincollig is a mecca for it , cycle lanes through the village then you are in countryside immediately , plenty of quiet lanes to go through , out to the coast in an hour, up the mountains , amazing.

I haven't been on the bike that much ,bought a new one last year ,only done a few hundred km .

Always do the Ring of Beara cycle every year. Fantastic cycle.

A Fab cycling group would be a good idea. Pick a different place and a route once a month or something?
