Cars are also going a lot faster, and many people are just really bad drivers. Anybody in road safety today will tell you cyclists should cycle side by side, take up the full lane and let motorists prepare and over take safely as they would any other road user. | |||

Most cyclists already own cars so pay road tax VRT is a government tax so nothing to do with Cyclists Personally have more of a problem with car drivers than cyclists and I don't even have a bike | |||

" I cycle a good bit and to be honest the way the roads are gone with traffic these days I would prefer to cycle alone and stay as much to the left as possible at least this way you are a smaller “obstacle” to overtake! Its funny, I never gave much thought about cyclists before taking up the sport but once you have experienced feeling the wind off of someone’s wing mirror on your elbow you realise how much care needs to be taken when passing them. I owned a motorbike before and I think everyone should drive one for a year, then you will know how to anticipate issues that may be around the next corner. Too many “new drivers” out there now with textbook experience, you can’t beat real life experience. | |||

Great idea to pay all of this however, if I am paying to use the road I expect to be treated as an equal, I want to be able to use the whole lane (after all I've paid for it), I want dedicated traffic lights (just like on the continent), road markings and road signs (because I'm paying for them). Incidentally, as a low (no) emission or even an electric vehicle, currently, all bicycles would be exempt road tax. | |||

The further left you stay, the more likely motorists are to try and squeeze out between you and oncoming traffic. Then, when they can't make it, they'll cut you off. Putting you at risk. Take the full lane, let them overtake as they would a slower car or tractor. The people that complain usually have other issues, problems at home, problems at work, etc. They're stressed and unstable and incorrectly think they're in a rush. If you asked them, they don't even know why they're angry! | |||

How is your general health and fitness, you could look for a straight handle bar bike with large tyres, (35mm wide). The straight bars will leave you more upright and comfortable. Wide tyres will give a comfortable ride. Also wide tyres are good on canal paths and similar. If you want to cycle distance early and work on fitness later, then an electric bike is worth looking at. Idea if you want to cycle to work. Happy to answer any cycling questions. | |||

You can spend a serious amount on a bike, and it will make very little difference. In terms of equipment, if you are going to take it semi serious and don't want to break the bank. I'd suggest looking for something equipped with Shimano 105, it's their mid level spec and it works really well. Major difference to the higher spec (Ultegra then Dura-Ace [top end]) would be weight. Last years Dura-Ace becomes this years Ultegra etc. You could also look at the Sram equivalent of 105, SRAM's Rival. If you are starting fresh to cycling, then also budget, for the accessories. Can't say enough good things about a good helmet. I've used a helmet a few times and was grateful for it. Padded shorts are a must for any distance as are gloves. Cycling specific tops are a bonus, shirts would have rear pockets for storing food etc. Jackets would have a longer cut at the rear. This gives you coverage / protection when you are leaned over on the bike. | |||
