Just talking to a client in West Cork and he happened to mention that he knows I'm a Dub because I called 1pm lunchtime

He said that its the middle of the day when the ordinary people of Ireland have their dinner

So when do you normally have your dinner

I'm in the evening

Yes it is more usual for country folk to refer to lunchtime as dinnertime. My father still follows this routine dinner at 1pm then teatime/supper around 6pm.

Depends if I am in the office or house for work.

If I work in the office dinner time is 1 and then a snack at home that evening or vice versa when at home

How I do it: (Original Dub now sticks dweller)

Breakfast, lunch, dinner, supper

Dinner at midday came from, and is only suitable for, farming lives I reckon, people up early working hard 💪

The West

Dinner in the middle of the day was primarily a farmers thing.

Not many people working in other industries had the opportunity to eat dinner at that time.

If possible, I prefer my dinner in the middle of the day!..but that wouldn't be daily!

I miss dinner all together...chatting obout the day or even arguing about elbow room

Honestly think the only time we do this now is Christmas day

Now some take it to their rooms or in to watch telly

I still prefer to eat in the kitchen unless its a pizza takeaway and there's sport on

Cork/Dublin

Dinner in Dublin was always in the evening. Being the youngest I had to fight to get something on my plate 😊

These days I have two Brekkies hobbit style in the morning and something in the afternoon. No dinner. A mixture of not being hungry in the evenings and can't be arsed

Many farmers have dinner in middle of the day because of milking time, between 5 and 7 in evening.

This disagreement is why one of my pet peeves is when people say "let's do X at dinnertime".

Say the actual time ffs, because you always need to follow it up with clarification of when dinner is.

Alicante Spain, and Cork City Ireland

Growing up it was lunch middle of the day while in school. However on weekends and holidays was at 1 o'clock roughly. Then at 6 or 7 twas tea time. Anything 9 pm or later was super.

I think things depend on the routine. Physical work needs a bigger midday meal, hence Dinner.

Office work after midday dinner tends to make people sleepy.

I've been in both scenarios and still am.

Never eat in the bedrooms or sitting room, in the sitting room we only have snacks , finger food and drinks for everyone at family evening entertainment . Love old tradition way sit down at the table and share food and chat about how everyone’s day want on.

Ideally 3 main meals , 3 snacks a day. Might have a light snack and a glass of water before bed. I can’t fully eat a breakfast at 6/6.30 In morning. Might just have a piece of fruit. Breakfast then at 9.30 /10.00

Lunch 1.00

Dinner 6 ish. Depends on that evenings activities. Sometimes when not working I’d have dinner in middle of day.
