Depends on how far up the east coast you are going.

If you get to Sydney visit Katoomba in the Blue Mountains

If you get to Queensland lots of nice places on the Gold Coast south of Brisbane and on the Sunshine Coast north of Brisbane. Noosa Heads is nice.

If you get to Cairns visit Port Douglas to the north.

I know someone who was in Byron Bay last week and said it is ridiculously expensive in comparison to other areas.

One thing you also need to be aware of is that Queensland don't change the clocks for daylight saving while the other areas all do so you can literally have two different time zones on opposite sides of the road which causes issues if you are following bus or train timetables.

Byron Bay is lovely, but a tourist trap.

Noose Heads is nice too, but it's where a lot of wealthy people have their beach house, expensive palce too.

The time change is some craic, particularly on the southern end of the Gold Coast, between T and Collangatta. Business on one side of the Street closed and the other side are open!

I would say, be careful when you leave Sydney, as NSW and Queensland are fucking massive! Depending on how long you're going for, don't waste too much time. You can drive for 12hrs and see nothing!

Google maps says Melbourne to Cairns direct, not by the coast, is 31 hours.

I did Brisbane to Cairns and it took 30 hours driving over 4 days with very few stops other than overnights.

It's a big country....

Everyone obeys the speed limit as the fines are about 3 times the amount here as I found out to my cost.

Thank you, internal flights are relatively cheap. Going for 5 weeks. Will try to see as much as possible
