Keep your phones handy. The phone camera can see the amazing colours much better. The plain eye will only see a faint glow.

We got some stunning photos last night

Driving home around midnight and didn't see a thing.

Someone who lives 100 yards away sent me brilliant pics just as I got home but I couldn't see a thing so I agree that it must show up better through a camera lens.

I find it's a bit pointless if you can't see them with the naked eye. I was in Iceland and picked them up with my camera but couldn't see a thing with my eyes.

That said people definitely did see the lights last night here without having to use cameras..

I saw them last night, was amazing. could clearly make them out with the naked eye but yes, the stunning colours really only coming through on the photos. I could make out the tinge of colour with the naked eye.

hoping for more of the same tonight.

Fell asleep on the couch last night and woke up to all the commotion about the lights online. Caught the tail end of it but pretty poor. I'll try again this evening but jaysus the effort, it'd want to be worth it. Have to take a bit of a spin as it's too built up/noise pollution around here.

.

You have to be somewhere very dark to get a good view with the naked eye. We drove all the way out of Dublin to see them.

But we're photography nerds so we were out with the tripods and all.

It was a like a big purple beam arcing across the sky.

The camera will show you what your looking out for. But it will be fainter to the naked eye. Mostly depending on light pollution.

It’s worth it. Get out somewhere with as little light as possible for about 10:30. I was sat staring at the sky for over an hour in absolute wonder. The colours were more vivid on camera but I could see the big pink streak easily and hints of green around it. I’ll be out tonight again if the clouds stay away.

I agree with all the above posts, you need a camera to make the colours pop. Luckily I live in the middle of nowhere, no light pollution.

It's strange though, some Inuit tribes always considered them a bad omen. I guess familiarity breeds contempt.

Ta very much. I've actually gone Aurora-hunting about half a dozen times the past few years when I thought there was a chance and always been let down. Typical I'd miss it last night. Anyways now I've someone to pin the blame on if my Saturday night ends up wasted

Get a night flight to LA it flies right up and around the top of Canada you get the full effect flying through them all around you.

Saw them last night in Dublin, you just need to be somewhere dark and let your eyes adjust. The night mode on your camera makes them look much brighter,so if you camt see anything yourself try taking a few pictures.

Had a great show around 11.30pm Friday night in West fermanagh and South donegal area. Vivid colours across the sky. A spectacular light show. Nothing tonight. More high cloud obscuring the view. International space station went over a short while ago

Lol! Report back on the effort expended v reward received .... was it worth it? A good report in itself might yield rewards from the nerds

I was still up on Friday and the household spent a good hour sky-gazing in awe. Absolutely incredible, once in a lifetime experience

I drove out to the Hill of Tara around 10.30 where I normally would try and view. 1km tailback, every bollocks was going there. Turned back and headed for another spot with a good vantage point, and spent about 2 hours there. Refreshing info on my phone and every source kept saying unlikely. So 1am or so I packed it in. Went to bed, set alarms for 2.30 & 3.30 to check the latest online, no luck. Places saying it's meant to be happening again next 48 hours...
