"Think we should have an election "

That would mean the resulting general election would be between 11-16 April and would result in 3 visits to polling stations in as many months (the referendums, local council/EU elections and then this) I can't see it happening as much as I would like to.

He's been a very poor leader.

From the beginning it was all about cultivating an image. But that doesn't work when you don't deliver.

There'll be no scandal either, over a dozen current TDs had announced they would not be running again. The powers that be in FG finally grew a pair and pushed him!

Simon Coveney or Pascal O'Donoghue

He clearly had this planned. He always dismissed a general election this year. It'll give his successor time to settle in prior to national elections.

There's a large number of FG candidates not contesting the elections.

When he said last week that the government didn't do enough to convince the public to vote Yes-Yes I knew then that he misunderstand what politics should be.

The government are elected to listen to and represent the will of the people. Clearly he thinks the government are elected to rule the people. It's the people who are sovereign and Leo needed to realise that to realise he's been in the wrong job.

He's the worst Taoiseach in living memory for one single reason, he does not respect the citizens.

Lots done, full employment, budget surplus etc.

But lots more left to do....that's what government is all about.

Will the next administration, perhaps Sinn Fein or a SF/Left alliance coalition, be able to magic up houses, repatriate immigrants, cut hospital patient queues.....

Of course they will.....

And how will they pay for all of this? Extra taxes al la Fine Gael or rifle the state coffers al la Fianna Fail.

We can look forward more of the same but this time with a ballot box in one hand and the other hand in our pockets.

Didn't Mary lou loo also state that if elected she would go again and again until she got a yes yes vote?

Sinn fein are ideally placed to take over but they face the same problems that the coalition face/faced . Plus they'll look after their base which will probably mean ,more support for unmarried mothers, more dole money etc etc .

As for Leo ,good riddance to him and his ilk ,trudeau and macron should follow suit .obnoxious bellends

I think it's Bizarre too to use the term "Unmarried Mothers" in this modern age of 2024 . It was used as a figure of speech (which I always found derogatory) in another time & era that has now passed thankfully.

I honestly don't think there is going to be some "scandal" or "exposure" as others have stated here too.

He was apparently considering resigning at Christmas but held off till after Paddys Weekend as in today. I may not have liked Leo Varadkar for a few reasons but I won't open that 'can of worms' of immigration but I must say he did great things for our Economy & went above & beyond for employment & industry. He also handled Covid very well, restrictions, lockdowns etc....

I believe his resignation was influenced by a few factors but definitely not a sleazy scandal or a defaming exposure as some are assuming. Time will tell ....

Ground down by the civil service and quangos!

LV came in as a libertarian, on the side of the private worker and business owners. Was supposed to tackle the volume of quangos we had, reduce taxes and shrink the nanny state...He never even started!

His biggest mistake? He went to far left, trying to placate people who were never going to vote for him anyway, in doing so he lost his base!

Exactly (minister & Taiseach pension for life) & he's still gonna be a practicing TD.

We always had a housing crisis (just maybe not as bad as it is now) & also our health service crisis was always there too....Re- so many lashing out (not here) saying he didn't do anything to help these situations.

I think Leo Varadkar did a good job in the bailing out negotiations with Nama way back & he had a major impact & influence in getting the country back on it's feet financially.

More so that I find it funny that people think they're even remotely right of centre, that belief is the result of decades of nanny stateism.

The left in this country has no foundation, there's always someone looking to out-left the other. It just continuously eats itself. We have no idea what right really is because we've never had it, thankfully.

Harris is the only one thick enough to go for it. The other ones have bigger plans and wouldn't sacrify their political career to run the party for a lousy year with the prospect of ending it with a catastrophic general election.

Do I believe he has done what he thought was best, I’m sure he has and has he got involved in politics for the right reasons, I believe that too. The scale of abuse our politicians and their families are receiving is reprehensible and I believe that is the reason he has resigned. Politicians should be scrutinised and held accountable, not abused and threatened.

I agree with you that there's no room for abuse or threat.

However I've rarely ever witnessed that they're being held accountable or take responsibility for their fuck ups, unfortunately.

I'd agree. Going through social media since it happened and reading the abuse he's getting for his ethnicity and sexualitity from certain quarters of the political spectrum is horrendous. Not just from Irish people either but from British, northern Irish and even America. Attack the man for his politics not his personal life.

Not just him. I've seen horrendous stuff regarding his ministers especially the minister for justice. Too many have gone the American route of personal attacks now.

Nothing on this earth is more pathetic than those Irish patriot types carrying on and imitating right wing British and American groups!

They're just angry about everything there is no point placating them. They've even turned on SF and PBP in the last year.

To go to a personal level on it isn't on though and uncalled for. I've my issues with the current government and their TDs but I wouldn't stoop to that level. As for turning on the PBP and sinn Fein the "patriots" were never with them in the first place. Far right will always go against what the left want.

There is going to be a real interesting and very angry era coming up in Ireland.

A lot of people say they're leaving Ireland because: Low pay, the cost of living is too high, can't afford a house etc.

They're going to the UK, Autralia, Canada...they may get a better lifestyle with weather and that, but the reality check around everything else will be ferocious!

I think it's Bizarre too to use the term "Unmarried Mothers" in this modern age of 2024 . It was used as a figure of speech (which I always found derogatory) in another time & era that has now passed thankfully. "

It's common lexicology ffs , it's used by commentators on radio /TV etc etc .

I honestly don't think it's that common anymore to use the term Unmarried Mothers in lexicology....I personally.... along with many others use the term Single Parents & some say Lone Parents..these terms also covers all sexes.

Fuckin hell. Leo too far left? Words we thought we'd never see.

As in they were center right and he tried to move to left of his own base not left wing I think

I think he tried to appeal to those outside his own base, very much left of centre. Particularly when SF came with their brand of politics, being all things to all people.

FG with Leo at helm ignored their base and left the door wide open to independents. I do find it funny that people thinkn FG or FF are right of centre. Goes to show how good we have it here. It's like yanks thinking Bernie Sanders is a socialist!

Hu? Are you trying to say that FF and FG are left of centre?

I also fail to see where and when Leo swerved to the left. He always stuck to the FG party line.

Anyhow he's gone, and with him his bundle of lies. In comes the next clown, Simon Harris ....it's a bit like a mini carbon copy of the British prime minister succession of recent years. "

FG and FF are both Tory parties without so much as a midge's Mickey between them. They will merge within 10 years.

The wider context of your post read like you were using Sinn Fein to take a dig at the working class and vice versa.

Maybe that's not what you intended?

I haven't heard anyone use the term unmarried mother's in a very very long time.

It just doesn't have any relevance given that a lot of people just don't get married these days and there are plenty of male single parents out there too.

In my honest opinion, the political waters in Ireland are completely muddied, and its not by accident.

People out there think the likes of FF, FG are right wing or ultra conservative and that SF or PBP etc. are left of centre. They've been allowed to spew so much nonsense over the last decade, and people are swallowing it.

PBP and SF are both far-left. SF do try run with the hair and the hound for votes, but they're a staunch socialist party that strangely has a communist party management system.

PBP et al, are further left again, just plain communists.

They'll tell you what you want to hear, but Id guarantee not many of you want what they'd actually like to deliver. This has you believing any opposition is far right or conservative party. Just my tuppence worth.

I've no idea how you come to this conclusion. There's nothing left of centre with FF and FG. They're both Conservative parties, not far right but defo on the right side of centre. SF isn't far left, they're actually on some topics on the right side and on some on the left and it has yet to be seen how left they will be when they're in power. I'd go that far that there's no valuable left in Ireland, the closest might be PBP but far too small to have any major impact. Same applies to social party. Just my 5 cents.
