When I pay a deposit for a plastic bottle or can, where does my money go if I don’t recycle it. Is this just another tax disguised as an incentive. It’s a scam if I’m been honest!

Well tbf , at least the government are trying to incentivise people to drop back their plastic bottles etc. There's so many things to complain about but this shouldn't be one of them .

Plastic recycling in general is a massive scam perpetrated by petrochemical companies to fool the public into continually buying their products. Plastic loses quality after recycling once. It then leeches toxic chemicals. Humans injest up to a credit card of plastic per WEEK. Plastic production plants and incinerator plants are massive polluters. If current trends continue plastic in the ocean will outweigh fish in the ocean by 2050. Over 90 percent of plastic disposed of up to 2015 was not recycled. It's cheaper to make a new plastic bottle than recycle one. Petrochemical companies (big oil) feared restrictions being put on their products in the 80s and 90s so pushed recycling as a solution knowing it wouldn't work. Much the same way they came up with the term " carbon footprint" for the general public. 100 companies are responsible for 75 percent of global emissions. These are in the majority petrochemical companies.

I'll tell what's an inconvenience, picking up litter. Outside my property its an on going battle picking up bottles and cans discarded by some of societies finest. A deposit scheme may diswade these gimps from tossing used drinks cans and bottles

To me,littering is a lack of manners and unfortunately those that do it won't be dissuaded by an extra charge on cans and bottles! Those that litter are too inconsiderate to give a shit about the environment much less the people that have to pick up their rubbish!! One of my absolute pet hates!!!

No It's not a scam....instead of bringing bottles & cans to a recycling plant by bin collection (which sometimes often ends up in a city dump landfill.... yup true

....) Return them in near perfect condition to store bought in & they'll be sterilised & reused....

I'm all for recycling but this new scheme isn't making recycling more convenient.

Screening each can for the new not very distinguishable fecky R logo I've now two sets of recycling cans that have to be kept apart, one for the bottle bank and the one that goes back to the shop.

the latter have to be kept in mint condition so that the recycling machine isn't refusing them

and you've to hand-feed them one by one into the machine.

they say it's a transitional phase until 'all' the cans have the new logo. Has yet to be seen if products from abroad ie polish beer will carry the new R logo.

I agree with Samseven on the plastic recycling, it's a scam. Unfortunately plastic packaging is everywhere and it's scary how much plastic comes together in my household in just one week. The only way to solve this problem is turn away from plastic packaging athogether. There's alternatives out there, but of course the oil industry doing everything in their power to block a shift away from plastic.

Incorrect, the retailer pays exactly the same deposit to the wholesaler/supplier when they purchase the applicable product.

Ages ago..... when we were kids,....we did the same with milk bottles. We got 5 pence for every bottle returned. I think it's a good idea although changing from what we get used to might take a little mental personal adjustment......
