The West

I proposed to the love of my life in the same picnic spot that we had our first date on exactly one year after we met.

I had a silver broach made for her that was a map of the city with our spot at the centre of it as an anniversary present.

And I gave her antique silver ring with a ruby I asked the jewelers to replace the original diamond with. I got it in her favourite antique jewellery shop in Dublin where she had shown me her favourite ruby rings.

A certain girl in my past had a thing for mugs and I took a secret pottery course for months in order to make her one I thought she'd really like

I used to write the same girl love letters and notes. Post them to her randomly so she would get a surprise for no reason. Leave them on her nightstand to find when she woke up in the morning

I read the entirety of The Raven to her in bed one morning on valentine's day because she said she had never read it, with lots of dramatic pauses, much to her amusement!

Years ago we had our first one-on-one (fab) meet in a nice Dublin hotel. We developed into a couple and the next year I contacted the hotel at Christmas time and arranged to book the exact same hotel room and we have a lovely time dinner and drinks and the same cocktail at the same seat. The following year I did the same and in the room we decided to concieve our first child. The next year I booked again, same room, only this time when when she was out shopping I laid rose petals on that same bed with chocolates and fairy lights and when she came back I asked her to marry me. A few years went by and we bought a wreck of a house and renovated it. We named the house after the hotel we went to, and continue to go to every Christmas each year. The same room and the same bed. We later discover than the couple who lived in our house around the turn of the last century were married in that same hotel on the other side of the country. We will go each year until we die.

Our first proper date we went to a hotel in carlow. Moonlit walks in the garden, romantic meal and plenty of giggles. Just the atmosphere and build up of intimacy without sex on the stay made it perfect

I was the reciever of a overnight stay on valentines day to Mt Juliet. This was in heady stages of my relationship. Everything was there, flowers, chocolates, fine dining. I checked in at 2pm, and he arrived at 10pm. Whilst the romantic gesture was there... He wasn't..

Now my ex husband.

I figure if we ever get divorced then I'll stash away her wedding dress and get a fab girl to wear it and I'll fuck her senseless in the dress on our special bed in our special room

People who know me well would tread cautiously with grand gestures, but the memory of one young fool still makes me smile.

We were about 14 or 15. He was smitten and I was not. He was always looking for ways to impress me and one day as I waited to cross a busy road in town he walked out into the traffic, held up his arms and forced it to stop, then gestured me across. I felt like a queen. it was a mad moment lol!!

In 1959 my dad bought my mum a really expensive valentines card

And today he unwrapped it from its protective paper and put it on the mantlepiece for my mum for its 65th year in a row

Tomorrow it'll be back in its protective cover and she doesn't know where he keeps it for the rest of the year

I kissed a French boy in south of France (I was 19), we arranged to meet for a date and he brought me to L Etoile shopping centre, where we walked around holding hands, he asked if I liked it and I said it wasn't very romantic.

So we went to his car and drove around Nice and he brought me to this beautiful park with a walled garden over looking Nice and the sea, it was very beautiful and he told me it was where his father proposed to his mother.

Sweet Eric.

It was a very romantic day.

lolli land

My long term ex and I had many differing opinions on things, but one absolute bug bear of his was me buying/wasting money on designer bags, it drove him mad but it was my own money I was spending so the argument never went anywhere. One time in New York I bought a matching bag and wallet, I was delighted with myself for saving and affording it and when I got home we had the mother of all rows about it and he would make sly comments every time he saw me with it for the next few wks, so we had a huge fight about it and I told him he may aswell have opened up the bag and taken a giant shit in it, that to me the bag represented hard work and savings etc, he felt bad then coz he had thought I just wanted to show off with a label. Anyway, fast forward to Valentine’s Day and I get home from work and on my kitchen table was a lovely bunch of flowers and a card and a box. I open the card and he said it nearly killed him, but he had done something he was absolutely and utterly against but done it to say sorry and that he loved me. Opened the box and it was the coin purse to match my bag.

It was what the gesture represented more than the gift itself that meant the most. He heard me, listened to what I had said and apologised.

You can ring up a company on the other side of the planet and get them to deliver flowers, cheesecake, whatever, dominoes pizza, Macdonald's if you like, to someone in that area and just pay by card. Nobody would expect it but it's simple to do. Helps with distance relationships!
