You need to be a special kind of lowlife to call for the blocking of supplies to direct provision centres with the aim of starving the residents inside it.

You could say, it takes a special kind of lowlife to put people into a direct provision setting. Having control over those in that situation. Living in substandard accommodation in many case. Providing adults with €38.80 and children €29.80 per week.

Interesting logic.. considering they firebombed a place near us just before Christmas that was to house a bunch of Ukrainian men, they also slashed and smashed up a car park recently containing a bunch of Ukrainian reg cars ignoring the irish ones.

Fail to see what relevance skin color has to do with this.

Most definitely not. Bringing traumatised people from one form of hell only to place them in another makes no sense at all. At the same time I'm sure there are some decent people with genuine concerns among those protesting in Ballinrobe so it's clear there is no easy solution to this. The question has to be asked, and I don't know the answer; is Ireland full? Bringing in men without having a roof to put over their heads suggests it might be.

Traumatised people need to be catered for in the correct environment and with the correct supports, otherwise we are putting people who may be suffering from PTSD into the community and we are not being considerate to the overall needs of the entire community.

I don't think it matters if the location is beside a school or creche or anywhere else.

It's bundling many traumatised people in together, suffering differing traumas, and expecting them to simply exist without a road map to recovery and independence.

The lack of supports is the problem.

If facilities were purpose built with correct staff and ratios, I think everyone would be more at ease.

Anyway, we are not going to solve it today.

BTW: The "no blacks, no Irish, no dogs" signs that used to be displayed in England post WW2, indicate its not a skin colour issue. The issue is the underlying trauma of having to flee for whatever reason, and it usually takes a generation (at least) to figure out that trauma and how it manifested, what poor coping mechanisms developed to mask the trauma.... Addiction.

We need to provide supports to overcome trauma, so that everyone is and feels safe. If we don't teach healthy coping mechanisms, then we are in for serious trouble all around.

We do have to have a conversation in this country with regards to immigration and especially homelessness

There's too many myths and lies told by right wing agitators that enable them to grift which is all that they care about

Unvetted military age men beside a school or creche

Just like all the rioters in Dublin a few weeks ago you mean or like most of the local men

Why don't we house our own first

Because anytime we try to build facilities to house homeless people we object to it in the planning or burn it down and we didn't really care about them in the first place ...its just something to shout

#Irelandisfull

A hash tag used by the far right

No its not...its just not used properly...how many ghost estates

Or empty houses are there in the country

One guy used it as a hashtag on the picture of his new born son the weekend....ffs

Men get off the planes with no passports so we could be letting anyone in

How is that problem to be solved I wonder

I have read that they destroy the passports in the toilets on the plane or before passport control to ensure that they couldn't be persecuted back home if they couldn't be identified

The good old Irish went to America and didnt get free everything...

They worked

There wasn't any welfare in America anyway

Why are these men not applying for settled status in other countries in Europe first

Because thats not the rule ..they can apply anywhere it doesn't have to be the first country

Just a few thoughts in my head

We all know the factories in small towns across the country that would close down without their staff from other countries ...They fitted it

Would rather have a converstion about these things rather than an argument

Most of these people protesting against immigrants are only protesting the fact that immigrants might muscle in on their racket and get social housing and dole money. I personally know people who are 3rd or 4th generation never worked and they go on about immigrants coming here and taking out houses and jobs. The irony is lost on them. I'd actually rather immigrants coming here to work than Irish people who refuse to work.

Having read the comments I think some of the responses are a bit mental, people are aloud to protest let them be, underfunded towns across the country being flooded with people from all corners of the globe where there's no infrastructure public transport etc why wouldn't they protest ? just so a select few can make a mint out of it all in the name of humanitarianism it's time some people woke up and smelled the dung...and the racist craic is just getting a bit old as well as the dole thing maybe people have genuine concerns and they're not being addressed

.

Most of then"genuine concerns" have been h heavily influenced by pure misinformation. I've seen it first hand people protesting convinced that the asylum process doesn't check for things like criminal records.

People telling lies about Direct provision centers resulting in Crime, despite that being demonstrably untrue.

I would ask all these people to simple go volunteer in such a center and actually meet people. It's much harder to deny their humanity or their needs then.

The residents of the direct provision center in my hometown are virtually invisible. You would never know they are there, but the way Twitter goes on you'd think they are kicking down our doors to take over our houses.

I'd much rather derelict hotels go to people who just need a roof over their heads, no matter where they come from. I'm not about this nimby business.

Empathy, compassion, and care for the well being of others are essential traits, I look for in my playmates.

It has been reported in the past few days that 480 asylum seekers who have arrived in Ireland since dec 8th are sleeping rough. It’s minus 5 degrees Celsius tonight. Surely all people are entitled to have a bed for the night be they Irish or not. A small bit of care for others isn’t such a drain on us.

From Rte

The Tánaiste has rejected claims that the Government bowed to pressure following a decision to house women and children in a hotel in Ballinrobe, Co Mayo, which was initially earmarked for male asylum seekers.

What does that tell you about the protest?

I get there might be a few unsavoury characters that squeeze through the cracks but for the most part these are decent people that have been through hell and then to be treated like animals when they think they've reached safety!!

It's so upsetting to see our country become like America, where are the welcome committee gone!?

Besides, plenty of nasty people who are Irish floating about, why don't they go bother those fuckers!?

We need to remember our History, other nations of people came to our aid even when they had their own plight, like the native Americans who sent money to help us with the famine, when they had their own problems with being forced from their lands and worse.

Breaks my heart to see our country lose its soul, don't think we can call it the island of saints and scholars anymore

"We do have to have a conversation in this country with regards to immigration and especially homelessness

I agree with you Bog,but if you have any opinion on refugees that doesn't align with the Gov you are far right. Its hilarious.Peaceful protest is any citizens right..well..at the moment at least

I’ve enjoyed what was , in most part, a healthy debate. Form years I was torn between so many different sides.

The thing is , I do believe , after a lot of researching and debating , why are we separating as a society. Covid was a huge one , some families were strained, some friendships broken forever. The days of healthy debates and disagreements, where we still treat each other with a respect and kindness, are a thing of the past. I don’t particularly want to agree on everything with anybody. We need to challenge each other , educate each other. If we don’t agree , that’s fine.

As Granny always said , it’s nice to be nice.

The country is fucked...

Yes we have large volumes of money passing through the state by the big multinationals and pharmaceutical companies which make us, on paper, a wealthy nation... but consecutive governments have failed to invest wisely in basic infrastructure which has got us to this point.

We have sub standard health infrastructure, prisons that are full, not enough guards, too many suspended sentences in the courts system, a growing drug culture,  gang culture, knives culture. Housing is fucked, rental market is insane, inflation is still happening and the far right is taking the perfect opportunity to incite hatred amongst those who are lesser off in society..
