"I'm an experienced hiker and know some fab routes and walks around tipperary area , galtees ect .. so definitely interested " I've walked Slievenamon mountain and the Galtee mountain!! One does need good hiking boots to walk the Galtees as it's a bit marshy the further up you go!! It's going down the mountain that you'll slip, happened to me so I speak from experience!! People need to be forewarned of the importance of wearing hiking boots!! There are fantastic views up on the Galtees if you can get there on a good day!!

"Just a word of advice to anyone organising one of these hikes. I used to be in a fab hiking group and the main reason I left it was people turning up with inappropriate gear. There were also people with different fitness levels and expectations so all of that combined to a few close calls on injuries and falls as well as some getting soaked through. I've also been part of a SAR team where far too many callouts were for people in trainers or dress shoes and jeans. Unfortunately fab walking groups often attract those who think it's all about the orgy at the top and who do people think they are advising on their footwear? Get out and enjoy it but who's taking responsibility if something happens such as carrying medical details of everyone in the group? Might seem pedantic and stupid but I'm speaking from experience." You are absolutely right, totally agree with this!

My original post was just to gauge what level of interest there might be. Firstly any walk organised out of this thread would be people meeting at a particular time and place and walking as individuals with responsibility for their own safety and welfare. Initial routes selected would be relatively easy and people could decide for themselves if they wanted to graduate to other more moderate or difficult walks with people who they felt were capable of doing the more strenuous routes. Lots of trails include routes of varying degrees of difficulty from a single start/finish point so people could decide what level of difficulty or distance they are capable of and still meet up for coffee and a chat at the start and finish. People would be made aware where and when others would be walking and it would be up to each individual to look after themselves. People would not normally turn up to participate in any outdoor activity such as swimming, cycling, football etc. without the proper gear so if someone turned up in runners, jeans and a teeshirt I don't think too many serious hillwalkers would be interested in interacting with them.

I would agree with your last paragraph except for one uniquely fab issue. Again from experience, there will be and have been numerous men and women seeking to impress so normal rules don't apply. I've witnessed group leaders allowing a woman to go on the walk despite her really inappropriate footwear because there was always the chance of getting a leg over later. I've seen people unable to attend hikes because they were still in Letterkenny hospital with pneumonia from the previous walk after ignoring all advice because they had their eye on a couple of ladies and didn't want to be seen as weak. It's fine and well expecting people to take responsibility for their own health and safety but there are always those who will say sure it'll be grand, if anything happens there are a few strong men to carry me down again. It really does happen.

"And anyone turning up to a group hike where the leader isn't asking for your details and checking your gear should find another group. " And if people wish to be part of a formal hillwalking group with orgnisers/ leaders, strict rules, insurance etc. then I would advise them to join a club affiliated to Mountaineering Ireland. As a hillwalker with 30+ years experience of walking, mostly alone, I would be more than happy to meet and walk with people on easy, safe routes in the understanding that they are doing so as individuals who are responsible for their own safety and welfare

"And anyone turning up to a group hike where the leader isn't asking for your details and checking your gear should find another group. " "It is an opportunity to get some fresh air and exercise, with a wide variety of "very easy" to "very difficult" trails available all around the country. It sould be possible to select some routes that would suit the fitness levels of all those wishing to participate. With some basic walking boots and rain proof clothing it is an all weather pursuit and not very costly apart from an initial outlay on suitable attire and travel cost to the trail heads." Seems sensible enough. Maybe chill ?

I've lost count of the number of small groups I've met when I'm out who haven't a clue where they are, no idea of the name of the carpark they started out from and on a few occasions were on the wrong mountain because they were following someone they knew from the pub. I'm not talking about official groups or taking out insurance. The group I walk with is not official but we all know each others capabilities. I have years of experience too and have trained in rescue first aid but I still wouldn't take a random group of strangers up a mountain without knowing who they were and who I could contact if they get lost or injured. Telling mountain rescue that _ealitybites wandered off on his own and you haven't a clue what his real name is doesn't really help them much.

"Lot easier to go for a walk on a beach " As long as the tide is out. If not its called sea swimming. But some walking trails do include beach sections so it can be best of both worlds.

"Experienced hiker here and would actually like to find a group to go with. As for people turning up unprepared, a lot of people would assume hiking involves sticking to gravel paths and trails." Proper footwear, basic rain proof jacket and trousers and a backpack with a snack and water would be adequate for most hiking trails. Most of the Coillte forest trails are manageable by people with basic fitness.

"I created a hillwalking chat group but unfortunately some people who were invited onto the group, in good faith, by someone who had kindly offered to help me set it up, didn't seem to understand the specific purpose of the chat. The chat went totally in a wrong direction with dic pics and personal messages being posted. Folks who couldn't stay on track on the chat would be most likely to wander off on an actual walk so would not be ideal people to be part of any walking group. Some people like to participate in that kind of chat group to promote themselves and I have no problem with that but it is not the purpose of the hillwalking chat group so they would be better off to join some more appropriate chat groups. Any walk that may take place would be held in a public setting so it is absolutely imperative that there is total discretion on the part of all participants. I am in the process of putting together a list of those who are interested, and are fab verified, and I will send those people details of the chat group hopefully over the next few days. Every walk happens "one step at a time" so please bear with me while I get the chat group up and running......or walking in this case. Best of luck to those who are interested in setting up groups in other parts of the country. Let me know if I can help in any way. Happy hillwalking. BadGer " I genuinely do wish you luck with this because in principle it's a great idea but you are already experiencing the very reasons that the vast majority of fab walking groups didn't last beyond the first walk. Those that did always disintegrated shortly after because of issues within the chatgroups and some people's expectations, most of which had nothing to do with hiking.

"Better that those who had agendas other than walking showed themselves early rather than causing hassel in a public place where any planned walks would obviously be taking place. I had two options. To just give in and let the time wasters win or be more selective about who to invite and go ahead and enjoy some nice walks and chats with like minded people. I choose the latter. As people who know me on here are well aware this old badger is wise to the ways of the world and doesn't suffer fools gladly. " Fair play Badger

Walks will take place in a public setting so I for one am going to be very careful about who gets invited to participate. "Click", or more correctly, "clique" comments on here certainly will not help anyone get invited to join what will be a small, closeknit, discreet group.

"Walked yesterday in Tomies Wood Killarney. Stunning views of Lough Leane and some nice winter sunshine. Coffee and a chat afterwards in Cronins Yard at the foot of Carrauntoohil. Hoping to walk in North Cork next Sunday. " Nice to see this taking off. If I was closer I would join you!

"My mates and I were dumb enough to do mangerton. We didn't get much of a view, and while two of us were rookies, instead of looping, we went around to Stroopa and back down, 7 hours of pain but it was good fun once done " Mangetout is considered more dangerous than Carrauntoohill as there is practically no shelter out on it. I know it as I have climbed both many times
