I was too young a load of lads above me in school were in it..they'd just finished school, although the FCA was over 18, in Galway anyway it was notorious for lads as young as 16!

They were used predominantly in the Battle scenes, got well paid too!

I'm kidding, it was the Fórsa Cosanta Áitiúil. It was basically Local Defense Forces or an Army Reserve. You'd go away for a few weeks every year for a bit of training in soldiering. Would have been fairly basic stuff!..Was very popular in some areas!

The blue max 60s film about ww1 had scenes shot in Ireland..believe a dog fight with planes going under a railway viaduct was shot near fermoy..

I'm led to believe tench scenes with irish army as extras..

As mentioned previously most of braveheart was filmed in Ireland again I believe had irish army as extras..

Saving private ryan d day scenes were shot on Welford beaches..again I believe had irish army as extras..

Was there any truth in an urban myth

The irish army had a recruitment drive with the tag line ..'join the irish army and be a film star'..?
