Since the other nerds are over there talking Sci-Fi, let’s discuss Fantasy novels and movies over here

Currently rereading Book 13 of the Wheel of Time. I’ve read the entire series but when I was discussing it with a friend, I realised that I don’t remember half of it so I’m rereading it while he reads 13 and 14.

Apart from LOTR, it’s my favourite fantasy series. Has anyone else read it? Did you watch the Amazon adaptation and despair?

Any recommendations for other series/authors?

I’m also reading the Atlas series by Olivie Blake but while I loved Book 1, Book 2 isn’t holding my attention as much.

Loved LOTRs books - and I’m normally not a non fiction reader. The recent series was awful - for loads of reasons

That said - didn’t love the Hobbit trilogy either, such a short book to drag out over three movies!

I can understand why people didn’t like them but I loved them all. My happy place is being immersed in Middle Earth so I’d happily have watched 5 hobbit movies.

Still sad that they left Tom Bombadil out of the movies

Magician is my favourite fantasty book of all time.

I read it twenty years ago and then read every other book he wrote.

The Nists of Avalon is right up there too but nothing else she wrote.

Robin Hobbs living ships and loving fool were great stories but the misery was hard to bear.

After that I kind of grew up and started reading sci-fi

Definitely a LOTR fan. Read it first age nine, didn't quite get swadsof it, but kept reading and rereading during the dark rainy school days.

I started the first LOTR book many, many years ago and didn't get passed the first couple of chapters. Loved the movies though.

Read several sword of truth books, very good books but can get quite graphic. The tv series was alright but didn't hold up to the books.

Big Marion Zimmer Bradley fan. Read most of her Avalon books. Think I was 12 when I read Mists of Avalon and was absolutely enthralled with it.

If you're looking for a new fantasy book series I would highly recommend the Belgariad by David Eddings, though he later admitted that his wife had a huge part in writing them. They have some of the best and most realistic representations of women in fantasy books. I am still surprised no one has tried to make a movie or tv series out of them

Another fantasty book series I really liked is from Suzanne Frank. When every one was reading the Outlander books by Diana Gabaldon I was reading these books. They're also about time travelling but way further back.

Loooove Raymond E Feist as well. Definitely rereading that series soon.

I read every single David Eddings book.

I think I was about 17 when I discovered him. I felt totally immersed in that world.

Orsan Scott Cards Seventh Son series's struck a cord me too. Though it annoyed me that he didn't finish it.

Didn't read LOTR or the Hobbit until I was in my late 30s or early 40s and loved them all.

The movies are among by favourites of all time. I bought the extended editions and watched all the extras on every disc.

I had never heard of Wheel of Time until it appeared in Prime and I can't say I have been impressed at all.

I used to read all the time but only a small selection of fantasy tales and I struggle to find time to read anything these days.

I've just started the new release audio book series of discworld. One book in at its got my favourite incarnation of death wish id found the books when I was younger.

Oh and you'll like that Andy serkis is narrating one of the books

This thread, unashamedly, made me read back over ye olde tales of Fabonia!

Not a patch on actual professional fantasy stuff mind you but this Halloween there will be another chapter!

The Hobbit was the first book I read I recall! That number is probably still in single figures though but I enjoyed it at the time

I've seen 'The Lord of the Rings' films but almost for the sake of having seen them although, again, I did enjoy them at the time! I just couldn't find myself saying "I'm in the mood to watch 'The Lord of the Rings'" some evening!

I'd certainly enjoy TV/films within the genre but I'm no reader; of any genre in fairness!

I may have just drooled a little one of the highlights of lockdown was Andy reading the hobbit on YouTube for charity. It was amazing.

I’ve only read the first book in the discworld series…I must get the second

Well Tolkien stands out as the top of the pile and still does.

Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time is very good and Brandon Sanderson did a great job finishing the series.

Raymond E Feist was always enjoyable but I actually think some of the best work was the joint trilogy with Janny Wurts Daughter of the Empire etc

On that note Janny Wurts did some good stuff by herself as well.

David Gemmell wrote some great stuff especially the Drenai series…Druss was a great character

Guy Gabriel Kay has some good stories as well

If you want a good laugh then Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series are easy reads but really funny fantasy.

There is probably another dozen good authors I could name but this post might be too long already

Speaking of the LOTR movies, Elijah Wood, Sean Astin and Bernard Hill were at Comic Con at the weekend and went to the Titanic Centre on Sunday which must have been moving for Bernard as he was the Captain of the Titanic
