"I'd be very surprised if there were practicing Catholics or Protestants on here. I'd be spiritual (like some of the above posters), I'm open to the idea that death isn't the end, an Agnostic I suppose. Mrs." I deliberately didn't name a religion as I don't know enough about most of them but I know some religions allow multiple wifes Wonder what they say about multiple sexual partners

"I do believe in god and the after life. I do believe there is more than where we are all at right now. Christian faith no. The absolute mockery they have made of innocent people throughout centuries that’s not religion that’s the lowest of the low on an absolute power trip. As for God I think in his/her eyes there’s a lot worse we could be doing than swinging. I believe once no one is being hurt no harm done " This is a great mindset to have ! I’m the same I do believe there is something more than just us but it would be an incredibly sad life to live thinking there’s nothing after life !

"I would go to Church at least once a month, at a minimum because of my shift work meaning I couldn’t go twice a month. When my children were younger, I would bring them to the ‘Children’s Service’ once a month. I would read a Lesson occasionally and have done that since I was about twelve. I would have no problem standing in front of a thousand people and speak to them because of this, it was a great way to gain confidence. I go because I believe in God. I also don’t need to be inside a Church to speak to God and many times I do speak to him a day, mostly because of people I deal with on a daily basis who drive me crazy. I would never disrespect any person over their beliefs or their God in whatever shape of form. Because I go to Church, does not mean I’m a religious nut or I’m ‘one of them’ or anything else. What I do find funny is people who say they don’t have a religion but don’t have a problem getting their children baptised or First Communion or Confirmation. That to me is hypocritical as the parents don’t believe but don’t want their children to miss out or stand out. If it’s because they need to send them to the local school as it’s run by the Catholic Church or the Church of Ireland, they can enrol their children in an educate together school and if there’s one not nearby, they can drive them that extra bit because if you don’t have a religion, you can’t use the religious school, Church, religious graveyard when it suits you. I also don’t know why people who have no religion, want a funeral. Would they not just go and get cremated and let their family scatter their ashes. Why would they want to be buried in a graveyard and have a priest or clergyman, which ever your persuasion is, stand over them and officiate at their funeral or even have a removal service or a funeral service. Have the Catholic Church and the Church of Ireland done some very bad things in the past? Yes they have. Absolutely awful. I have flicked through a report released recently about abuse in Ireland by both Church’s and I tell you something, it wasn’t something God told them to do. It was power and greed that made the people do those things and hide behind God when they were caught on it. " For long enough there weren't many options here for a non-religious celebration of the life of someone who died. Until just recently there was only one crematorium in NI. Humanist funerals are still not particularly common and there are no natural burial sites in NI. So, it's still not easy to do things differently from the expected norm here and I think a lot of people go with the traditional because it's logistically easier for those organising it, rather than it being something the particularly want. With regards to schools, I actually didn't have any option other than to send my children to a Church of England school as I lived in a rural area with sporadic public transport and no car available to me. However the school welcomed children of all faiths and none, and it was possible to withdraw children from the religious aspects of the curriculum if you so wished.

"Never really gave it much thought, to be honest. I believe in heaven, being reunited with loved ones, the happily ever after I suppose. I would say I’m a catholic, I go to mass at Christmas, I’d baptize my children incase anything happened to them, I’d want the last rites if I was dying. But it makes me uncomfortable that I believe in a god that makes children sick and when there’s so many people starving and dying from hunger. It galls me that the Catholic Church has taken no responsibility for their actions towards women and children in this country, and seem unrepentant and devoid of any guilt remorse or shame… I think sub consciously I’m afraid not to believe just incase I don’t get to see the people I’ve lost again. Ha!" Just have your own perception of life..and obviously I know what you’re saying I’d have my kids baptised christened and all the jazz .. but that’s keeping up with appearances..just have your own beliefs no one can take that from you

"My mother is Church of England my father is Irish RC. Father forcably adopted by parish priest and abused in Bessborough mother and baby home and then again in boarding school Rockwell. Laura also forcably at insistence of priest, adopted and mistrated in Dublin mother and baby home, and again by first adopted RC parents, then returned to baby home to be readopted again. Lied to continuously by adoption agencies in attempt to find original birth parents. Told different lies by different people in order to hide the abuse. Actively dispise religion and will cross the road to pass a priest and try and resist the urge to spit. Don't believe in the supernatural at all." Well said and I'm sorry to hear about your collective experiences We're both atheist here and have some pretty strong thoughts about organized religion and happy enough to discuss faith and history rationally with calm-minded folks when appropriate. We don't enjoy violence or confrontation so we keep to ourselves mainly though. Bold topic to bring up OP - heartening to see people sharing their stances without vitriol though

Exactly everyone makes mistakes lies etc. People do what they gotta do to survive and protect anyone they take care of. It’s the Ying Yang of life. The problem is when any person intentionally goes out to hurt others and has no care or boundaries for what they are doing I think that’s when God or whoever you believe in may have a problem.

"It's not sad living life without an afterlife. It's joyous. You don't need to spend your life cowing down under a dude in a dress in another country. You don't need to constantly apologise for human nature. You don't need to congratulate a man in the sky and give his representatives on earth a portion of your income. You don't have to pretend to believe in fairytales or miracles. You can just look and wonder at the world and universe around you and your part in it and know that you're made of stars." There's some nice versions of an afterlife that don't require penance or prostration. As the Buddha said Where does the flame go when it is extinguished? Same with Christ, Muhammad, Solomon. Probably all good chaps until the People's Liberation Front took charge. Or was it The People's Front for Liberation Unfortunately all of the great women were written out of history or relegated to side kicks. Mary Magdalene must have been a mighty woman to keep her name in the holy books.

Being able to park a belief just makes a mockery of it. I'd have a lot more respect for someone who truly believes and follows the teachings
