A lot of jealousy going around. A top TV presenter can command a large salary, and it's on the employer to justify agreeing to a wage package, not the employee.

And if an employer tells a third party an incorrect salary, then it's not the employees responsiblity to correct it.

"Tubridy a top TV presenter no he isnt"

Between his radio show and the benchmark chat show, and high profile toy show... he was inarguably Ireland top presenter.

Love him or loathe him (I'm the latter) he WAS the top guy.

It comes down to the old adage

“The easiest way to make a million, is to make someone else 100 million”

He brings in more than he costs, so he gets his big wedge

His radio show was abysmal just like the late late, the personality of a dish cloth, he has zero charisma and likability unlike gay Byrne or even pat Kenny and he's known as plank

I'm no fan... But if enough people think you're hot shit then that's what you are. RTE obviously thought he was.

The person why should lose their job is the one in RTE who approved the payments.

Dee Forbes is the person who approved the payments ,how convenient this all came to light a few months before her contract was up, I really think this is orchestrated on purpose, he doesn't want to stay in rte after 14 years any job would become fatiguing , all that money was squirreled away in a tax free pension no doubt

I don't see that Tubs or RTE gained anything here so I don't know why they would have orchestrated this.

Don't we just love seeing a successful person fall from grace.

He got paid the salary because he got and kept his audience. That's what matters in broadcasting.

But typical Ireland just waiting for the chance to kick anyone that's more successful than them.

Begrudgery ???

RTE are a financial mess and need to be bailed out by the Government

The new DG is knocking them into shape .

There's no one knocking Tubridy door down to sign him up ...

Wasn't my point, the financial mess of rte is nothing to do with tubridy. He negotiated a salary, how rte paid and disguised it is nothing to do with him.

My point was people taking pleasure when someone successful falls from grace.

What i find odd is that his wages for 2017 - 2019 that they disclosed publicly as they have too, didnt match what he knew he was earning for those years by around 100k, yet he never noticed this?

I mean, there has been such scrutiny on the wages of the top Rte staff since the 08 crash, I find it odd that he wouldn't have been keeping an eye on the media when they released the figures.

It's not his job to report an error his employer made. Whether he knew or not is irrelevant. It's RTE's error and their responsibility.

It's the arrogance of him up there in grace as one describes where his place was

A small bit of humidity n ownership of his situation from the day one would have seen him through this n back in grace in no time

I've never been a fan and I think the ridiculous salaries laid in RTE can't be justified as I doubt those people could get anyway near same salary anywhere else.

But we would all do the same if we got the chance, offered silly money.

Top TV presenters get paid that and more elsewhere in the world. It's a ridiculous amount of money agreed, but it's not unusual internationally.

I dont agree, he more than likely knew and decided to say nothing.

He's denied any wrong doing and came out all guns blazing in defense and now it's backfired on him.

If RTE refused to pay some of there top earners their salary demands do you think they would get snapped up by the BBC, SKY or HBO. I doubt it.

No one in the UK or America knows who Ryan Tubridy is or Joe Duffy or Miriam O Callaghan or Pat Kenny!

Seems a lot of them have family backgrounds that help. Tubridy, lottie Ryan, O'Garrihey etc

Fair play to him if he can.

At the end of the day anyone of us would squeeze as much as we could from our employers.

If anything RTE are to blame for having such poor haggling skills when negotiating contracts.

If I told my boss I could earn more in the middle East he would tell me not so politely where Dublin Airport is!!!

His late late Stephen Fry interview was the final straw for me. Total cringe

The broadcasting landscape has changed phenomenally since the advent of RTE TV in the early 1960s, and the emergence of the pirate stations which morphed into local broadcasters; RTE's funding model of a licence fee with advertising too, is dead, and will be buried within two years.

I never listened to Ryan Tubridy nor watched him on The Late Late Show because I disliked his fake style of interaction with guests.

RTE has to adjust to a new financial culture; Joe Duffy will be the next to go; he used to be worth listening to, but his style is now jaded and tired.

Ryan Tubridy and RTE have reached the end of the road

I don't mean that spot specifically... I mean RTE generally. I don't often agree with McShite, but it needs a slimming down and an overhaul. They used to have a near monopoly, but suddenly they are in a very crowded space with streaming in particular, and now with the oncoming financial crisis with boycotts of the license fee. It needs to show value for money, and better governance, to regain public trust.

RTE in general seriously needs a shakeup & a big 1 at that aswell. They want to increase the licence fee now aswell. That'll only make more people not pay & use other alternative ways of watching TV programmes, etc.

I honestly think they need to slim down. Reduce the headcount. Cancel a few services, and concentrate on having fewer, but higher quality original programming.

Ok, I’m not a huge fan of Tubs but I’ve always thought he was sincere and professional, if anything I’ve always thought that he shied away from asking hard questions.

I would like to ask the question, if a company was willing to give you €150,000 or whatever it was and it wasn’t illegal, 1. would you take it and 2. would you tell everyone about it?

Ya, I'd be the same as that aswell, about it him.

Good question.

1, Hard to say, for me really. IF I did take it, I'd be SERIOUSLY be on my gard over it & try not spend it all.

2, No, better say nothing until I hear more.

It’s very difficult to refuse money if you think you have worked for it Then your realise your employer has broken the rules, a lot of people wouldn’t really know what to do, and end up saying nothing about it.
