Telegram beats every other chat app by a country mile.

It absolutely blows my mind that people who value their privacy will download an alternate blue version of an app that is unsigned and insecure. It's free. It's not encrypted....

I'm not into tech I chat on fab.. with telegram I think they need your phone number something about your contacts . I'm not sure as I said I'm not into tech .. just becareful before joining any group

Just make sure you set your phone number to be not visible to anyone in the privacy settings of telegram

Be cautious. I created a profile, Set my phone number to private. Set my name to be something filthy. Had some chats. Next thing I know an old friend messaged me to say hi as he was notified I joined by the app. Was no biggie for me as he knew our filth anyway, but someone else might be caught out.

People who have your number and also use telegram and are in your contacts will get a notification that you joined. That's ok as not everyone uses it for filth

But if you set your number visibility to "no-one" in the privacy settings no one that doesn't already have it will see it.

Be interested to know the answer to this too. Surely if when signing up for the app you just don’t allow it to see your contacts they won’t get notified? Unless it’s based off the people already on the app showing their contacts

I don't know, but I suspect that telegram reports your phone number to other telegram users if your number is in their contacts. I could be wrong

So telegram just notifies people no matter if you give them access to your contact list or not? Well that’s a pain! Not sure we’d get away with it so easily with it being a cpl profile we’d be setting up lol

Set it up last night..shit a brick when my sisters name came up ..a few fab friends came up as well..the name came up as I have it stored under my phone contacts..so I'm guessing whatever they have you stored by is the name that will come up???..I eventually found the setting to hide from contacts and now no names are showing up..question though, do I need to know the phone number of people I want to talk to?..thanks x

No they can't. You can block everyone from seeing your profile and phone number and then selectively choose the people and groups you want to see.

You can also have a 'public' profile pic seperate from the one want to use for your naughty groups or chats.

That makes sense thanks.

Seems like it's a great app, but there are a couple of gotchas for totally private usage. The nag screen on startup to allow access to contacts being one.

That's really the barrier to entry for telegram. Not everyone is going to have the wherewithal to dig into the privacy settings and know what way to set it up.

The phone number thing is funny too. A lot of people don't want to hand it over but will use kik, a totally insecure app own by a shady consortium to send photos full of biometric data and confess their intimate desires and kinks.

If the product is free, your the product.

It asks for access to your contacts. If you don't give access your contacts don't know you're on Telegram

You do need to submit your number on set to to verify your phone.

Refuse access to contacts when prompted

Lock down privacy settings

Then add profile pic etc
