"Bunch of politicians hounding RTE staff at the PAC just to make themselves look good. It's all optics. Like him or not Tubs was RTEs cash cow so they paid him to reflect that. Is it right? No. Is this the way many private and public sector companies work? Yes. As for the favours for friends; again common practise. Politicians vilifying anyone for that is hilarious!" It's impossible for politicians to make themselves look good - everybody knows they're just as bad as each other

"This is how Ireland still works, who you know, backhanders, the "in" people, why would RTE be any different, the majority of people would take an off the books payment if they though they'd get away with it ( not sufficiently interested to establish whether Tubridy declared all his earnings for tax). Ever paid a tradesman cash? You're no different. I pay the licence fee, I think it's important to have a state service, that said, I never watch it. Last saw the Late Late when Gaybo was at the helm. " Yeah don't really agree that paying a tradesman in cash is the same thing. That's dodging the vat/tax. In Tuburdi's case it's unaccounted taxpayers money.

The Late Late Show and timeslot is an RTE asset but has been treated as if it was an asset of the presenter. There are many people who could read an autocue to a similar standard as Tubs. The brand value of Tubridy only exists because it has been enabled by RTE and let's face it, he wasn't so much discovered as anointed.

He made the best fist of it that he could for a 2 hour show in a country that real celebrities visit infrequently. If, as I suspect will happen, he doesn't work for RTE again you'll see him and/or hear him across the water very soon. I'm not his biggest fan but I can see he's a talented guy.

He was on BBC Radio a good few years back but They expressed zero interest in him returning there at all.

I've never found him to be a good interviewer, he sticks rigidly to scripted questions and timings with very little raport with the interviewee. I will watch with bated breath to see how he does in the wild, I've never really bought into the notion that we have to pay ’RTE talent’ top dollar because they are irreplaceable and that British stations are waiting in the wings to poach them. The only 'RTE talent' to have been poached by a British station since Terry Wogan has been Zig and Zag. RTE should focus on offering pathways for developing talent so that even if they lose someone big, there's a readymade replacement. Nobody is irreplaceable.

The money that RTÉ is spending is taxpayer's money, regardless of how they came by it. There's a huge difference. The whole Gaago thing irritates me anyway but it's only the RTÉ element of its championship coverage deal that is open to public scrutiny. If the GAA is up to some dodgy dealings with their money, then that's a matter between them and their members, rather than the public at large. Presumably the GAA will be asked to clarify the details of their deal with RTÉ but that's restricted only to the Gaago entity rather than the GAA as a whole.

If you were getting paid hundreds of thousands during a time of austerity andlocked down and you publicly announced that you would take a cut in solidarity with the taxpayers who paid your wages, Then took the cash under-the-table anyway, Then it would be like-for-like.

"They can't convict us all. Think Water Charges. Imagine receiving your TV licence renewal today? What would you do? I'd be inclined to let them chase me into court. Let them do all the running. If I receive a summons, just pay the licence then in advance of a court hearing. You cannot be convicted by a court for not paying your licence if you can show you have paid it, albeit late. " Such a waste of taxpayers money and again, exactly what's wrong with society.

This is fraud, the car allowance was basically a way of hiding a €20k pay increase, without having to spend on vehicle. How was the car hidden, I wonder. Was it down as a fleet vehicle or hidden in some other account?

While I agree that the government is the problem in a lot of cases, it wouldn't be right for the government to be micro managing public broadcasting. The only thing they can do is appoint a board to run it, or at least oversee the running of it. One of the problems in this case is that the board of RTÉ appears to have had very little knowledge or control over what the executive board was doing. Add to that a culture in which "talent" was grossly overvalued, and plenty of cash to spend, and you end up with a catastrophe. Let's not forget that Pat Kenny was earning €950,000 per annum from RTÉ in 2008, although earning is probably the wrong word. The most overpaid of all though was probably Marian Finucane on €630,000 per annum for 4 hours on air per week for about 8 months of the year, as well as one hour on TV per month for maybe three months of the year. Ridiculous figures in a country where there was no competition. There was no other channel they could go to. There was, but they couldn't afford anything but a small fraction of those sums. Farcical stuff.

While I agree that there should be an inquiry into all of it and those responsible for squandering taxpayers money should be held to account. "Given the choice I'd have taken the money. It was negotiated and offered so no problem there. I don't watch the late late but it's a consistent ratings topper so there's loads that do. RTE actually produce a lot of good programs (and bad) it's a public service broadcaster which means they have to cater to everyone not just the netflix generation. Now management that's different but a few things. Barter accounts are widely used in the advertising business as well as other corporates... How many on here have been on a golf trip through work. Don't really have a problem if it brings in revenue. The issues are how it was all hidden from the board auditors and gov. If there's a suspected fraud or anything else illegal then the gardai need to investigate.... But they have to be asked seemingly. " I can't see much home grown tv produced by Rte then again I gave up watching anything on Rte a few years ago, Rte pick the best tv from British and American networks and use it as their own, it's pure laziness imo, most of those tv shows they get for nothing but the public get ripped off 160 a year, it's clear to see money is being spent on ridiculously high salaries and being squandered elsewhere

"Never been so much fuss about fcuk all!" Fuck all? It's only recently that RTE were campaigning for Revenue to collect the licence fee at source. They've been crowing about lack of money for years, while they've been coking books to blow huge sums on a annual basis. The salaries thing is something that got out of control, they know this but still felt a need for back door payments with public money. The biggest issue here is that corporate governance is very sketchy in a state body handling hundreds of millions annually. We let this white collar activity fly way to easily in Ireland.

"it's going on in every organisation in fairness. In rte I feel Tubs is being made a scapegoat. " What goes on in privately owned businesses is between them and revenue. What goes on in state owned businesses is a whole different ball game as it's tax payers money. Tubridy gave an interview in November 2019 where he announced he was taking a pay cut and how he was "haunted by children in poverty". This was widely publicised at the time. What wasn't publicised was that he, or hours agent on his behalf, was negotiating the under the counter payments to mitigate the cut.

Eh, no, that's not going to happen.

"Tubs and his agent up for questioning next week should be interesting. Funny thing is hearing all the politicians roaring and shouting about this scandal and their the most crooked fuckers ever themselves. " Corrupt politicians are easily dealt with. Firstly there's SIPO, then there's elections. They can easily be voted out of office by us. We have no such control over RTÉ. Also, there's something wrong when the people tasked with running the country are getting paid a fraction of what someone who's on the radio for a few hours per week gets paid, and I'm certainly not suggesting that politicians are underpaid.

Who voted for D'Arcy, Tubridy, Finnucane, Duffy, O'Callaghan, etc. Who put them on their self perceived pedestals?

"Why did he just leave the late late and stay on the radio if he "saw it coming?"... I've thought for a long time that they paid their presenters to much considering the very limited market out there. Fair play to that "agent to the stars" things will change now. Are Renault getting away lightly?? Because he had hoped to sign a new contract for radio only I think people might figure out that he was the guy who used to be on the late late and had been paid um... Around the table... Your thinking like a normal person. But imagine you have Tubridys, ego, and sense of entitlement. This guy fooled a load off people into thinking he was a "nice guy". Not some money hungry fucker! My opinion: Once RTE told him about the audits, he didn't care about the revelations. He knew, at best, that a massive pay cut was coming, so, disgusted, he left. He is RTEs "star man" after all! He thought he'd have no problem negotiating a handsome fee for an hour on the radio every day instead. Never thought nice guy Ryan would see a backlash over a few hundred grand!" He's a head ffs ... of courses his ego is out of check ...

"I’d say more will come out. At the end of the day it’s RTE in the wrong. What they communicated was false. Why Ryan Tubridy has been taken off the air I don’t know? He’s done nothing wrong. He was paid to do a job. If people feel he was paid too much that’s just an opinion it’s not his fault. At the moment it’s a bit of a soap opera and it’s daily updates on who did what. It is what it is. And from here in I’d say RTE will have to pull back all discretionary spending. License fee payments will inevitably drop but you are right to keep paying yours. So will I. " ************************ In my opinion if Tubridy was aware his "Ned Kelly" agent was negotiating a "work around" payment deal on his behalf then he is culpable and deserves to be dropped by the "new" management of RTE. If he was not aware then he is guilty of being either asleep at the wheel or as dumb as a post. Either way he is no longer a requirement for RTE to fulfill its public service broadcasting role and should be left to make his way in the commercial world where, up until he was found out, he was quite happy to exist and to reap the rewards for being such a wonderful "talent"

Somewhere along this road there was always the threat, vague or otherwise that he "the talent" would walk. He was then cut back to €729,000. When he left RTÉ he ended up with a five year deal for €2 million for more hours on air. The main reason he left RTÉ was because of his bitterness over wage cuts. Now, Ryan Tubridy is a very different type of presenter to Pat Kenny. Pat Kenny is a fairly forensic interviewer and Newstalk needed someone with a bit of gravitas to build their brand as a serious news channel. There is no commercial channel in this country who could match what Tubridy is being paid at RTÉ, or even come close to it so I'm not sure where he'd walk to. Most people who pay for advertising on RTÉ do so because it's the national broadcaster, not because it's Ryan Tubridy. "I enjoyed watching the soap opera on RTE in the Dail today, best value for my licence fee. I feel sorry for current CFO Rich ard, he brought barter account into balance sheet which you are meant to do. Internal audit found irregularities. The old board were asleep including the workers rep." The CFO was in fact the one who attempted to bring some order to the sorry mess that was RTE 's lack of corporate governance but unfortunately for him he got run over by a runaway bus in doing so. Tubs playing to the crowd, acting the victim and hiding behind NK was somewhat pathetic. NK's refusal to outline the background to the tripartite deal, his constant mantra that "RTE made me do it" and his refusal to quantify his beneficial gain from the dodgy dealings was very Del Boy like.

" He got his break in RTE in the first place cos his grandfather Todd Andrews was a former chairman of the RTE Authority a long time ago. The old Irish thing about who you know." Just goes to show how close knit certain media people in Ireland are, during the 2000's I think Tv3 did a series of interviews with mostly politicians hosted by Ursula Halligan. She interviewed Bertie and all the leaders of the different parties separately for each show. Each episode lasted about an hour and she basically interrogated each person, laid into them etc about their leadership style/party policy etc. She really grilled each person. Then after that she did an episode where she interviewed the 3 Andrews brothers together on the same show. At the time I think either all of them were TD's in south Dublin. Now only one of them is a TD and he jumped ship from FF to Sinn Fein. I just happened to watch it and I nearly fainted when I saw how she treated them. She was kissing their assess! She was sooo meek with them, having banter with them and no way did she interrogate any of them the way she treated the previous people. It was unfucking believable to see how she ass kissed them and she portrayed herself as such a hard nosed serious journalist etc I didn't watch the rest of it as it was such a shit show. So if you didn't know how connected these Andrews were before, it was definitely obvious after that night. Obviously Tubridy was related to the right people.
