So interest rates rise again to their highest peak in 15 years. Inflation high and wages not rising in comparison. Households are being squeezed, renting a property is extortionate and also the growth of food banks is getting scary. Have I missed anything?

I paid 17.5% interest on my mortgage in the late 70's and early 80's.

Lots of unemployment, fuel shortages.

Interest rates have been unsustainably low for a long time now so a slight rise had to be expected. You can start to complain when they hit 14 or 15%.

I was locked in at 10.5% when that shit show hit!

The big difference is the figures though. 10% of 70k doesn't sound half as scary as 10% of 500k.

Thats the main difference and what a lot of older people choose to ignore. When regaling us with stories of interest rates.

A house could be built for x3 the average industrial wage in the 80s. Closer to x10 now!

Those who took out 20yr mortgages in the mid-90s saw wage inflation erase it in a few years.

None of the above will happen now!

I can't and won't complain, had 15yrs of very low rates.

Unemployment near an all time low, 4.36 It was 17% in the 80s.

It's swings and roundabouts really. Nowhere is ever going to be perfect. But Ireland in Summer is pretty close
