I wonder did you read the article in the Irish Independent about a man who abandoned his family in Fermoy twice, once in the 1950s and once in the 1970s. First time he disappeared for 20 years with no contact until he returned for one year in the 1970s before disappearing again, never to be heard of. Turned out he'd a second family with 5 kids in England.

I wonder is there any modern day versions of that story...
