Watching coronation street lately (yeah I know) and they are doing two consecutive storylines... One regarding stalking and one regarding s*xual assault... In both cases the woman isn't believed...

Do you think this is wise as women who are going through it in real life might be put off reporting it fearing they won't be believed either??

Just to give an indication about how out of touch I am with Coronation Street, the last time that I saw it, Ena Sharples was the main female character and the Granada TV soap opera was only shown in poor quality monochrome.

I don't watch soaps so I haven't seen the story lines. I hope it doesn't put people off reporting it but the fear of not being believed has always been there and quite often why it's not reported. I know I didn't when it happened to me many years ago when a partner sexually assaulted me even though my doctor really wanted me to go ahead and report him I didn't because he was one of those 'nice' guys in public and I knew no one would believe me. The point was proven when I told someone who I thought was a good friend and even though she saw the bruises and marks he left on me she couldn't believe he would do such a thing.

I would hope now years later there would be more support there to help real victims be less scared of coming forward though.

And on another note at the other end of the scale those people who make false reports should be made face harsher sentences as well.As I've seen it from the other end of the scale where a guy's life was ruined by someone reporting a false assault he even did time for it only to have her say years later she had made it all up because she wanted to get back with another guy she had been dating previously and the lie grew and she had to keep going then and now sorry she was in hindsight.

They are another reason why victims are not believed as well and those people disgust me.
