Road running..trail running can damage your knees...back...ankles...

The treadmill is a softer approach...and you can always stop when you have enough and get off where you started

The availability of equipment to crosstrain.

Safety.

Easier to do interval training.

More social interaction.

Fair play on run. Just get outdoors, evenings getting longer. There are hiking clubs, fit for life running clubs, swimming clubs. Enjoy the outdoors. I go to gym once a week well most weeks, to do a circuit exercise session.
