1984 and how we've moved on

1984 ....just reading what happened in Ireland in that year seems so far away from where we are as a country now

Ann Lovett died alone in a grotto giving birth as a 15 yr old

Eileen Flynn sacked as a teacher for having a baby while not married to the man she was living with ( who was married to someone else )

Then 2 dead babies found in Kerry and a woman blamed on everything called Joanne Hayes

To some on here you're too young to remember

To others on here we're old enough never to forget

The news of a couple arrested in Kerry yesterday will bring all the stories back out

Thankfully those days are gone

I'm old enough but none of those names or stories mean anything to me because we didn't have much access to news of things happening down the country so I'm not aware of any of those events.

In 1984 we were too focused on what was happening locally and living the news rather than reading about it or watching it on TV.

On one hand we should be thankful that there is more awareness and understanding these days of things like this but at the same time we are more vulnerable to media manipulation.

The child's death itself was bad enough, what the Gardai tried to do to Joanne Hayes was beyond appalling.

But judgement of women for their sexual activity isn't a thing of the past, plenty of it going on even here on fab

A neighbour at home acquired his nickname at the time... "J******* L****, the daddy of them all". He's still known by the same name but most people have no idea of the reference.

I heard the Garda most associated with the case on the radio a few years ago, just before the Gardaí admitted that they had got it completely wrong, and he still claiming they were right.

He himself was a throwback from the Garda "heavy gang" another forgotten offence to justice.

I remember wondering at the time about the Garda theory of superfec... whatever it was, that a baby could be the result of fertilisation of a female egg by two men at the same time, and being curious as to what the liklihood of that would be. We had no Internet to search so easily for these things though so it was years before I was able to look it up.

Grim times indeed.

To my eternal shame and embarrassment I once saw Joanne Hayes in Tralee a few years later

I held open a door as we walked into a hotel and said too loudly to my girlfriend " thats Joanne Hayes " and she heard me and looked at me .

Everyone in the hotel noticed her and stared as she walked past

Its incredible to think back on it

It was bizarre too the way the name found written underneath the bed became such a big issue. It was claimed that this could have been the father of the child and they searched high up and low down for the holder of the name. I think it turned out to be the fella who made the bed in the first place.

Do people really sign their name on the underside of the beds in which they do the deed?

Was equally horrifying but the baby's death stood out to me for some reason. What happened to that woman and her family at the hands of the gardai at the time was wrong and I'm glad she got some sort of recompense for it but seemed too little too late at the time.

The case that changed the world for a lot of children was Mary Boyle in '76.

I was ten at the time, living on a small farm about 30 miles as the crow flies from where she went missing. The panic in the rural north west was even noticeable to us at the time. As a ten year old you'd usually have had complete freedom to wander the small roads and fields around the place and might not be back at the house for hours after you'd leave. A regular job was to bring in cows for milking in the evening. All of that changed on the 18th of March that year. Strange cars were noticed and watched suspiciously as strangers were seen as the major risk for children. Little did we know then that family members were by far the biggest risk. It took a while for parents to relax again but I'm not sure if things were ever the same again in that general area.

He certainly didn't suffer the same opprobrium as Joanne Hayes but he was a household name for a long time after.

That was the murdered baby found in Cahersiveen. The other baby was hers and was found buried in a bog beside her house which was miles away from the first one, having been stillborn.

Joanne Hayes was accused because she had presented at hospital obviously having given birth recently, but no baby. It subsequently turned out her baby was stillborn and had been buried on family land. But that didn't stop Gardai from deciding she was the mother of the baby on the beach.

Remember it well as a young Kerryman, don’t forget the squinting windows and how dark everything was.

Eamonn Casey and Annie Murphy also not to mention all those paedophile priests whose were moved around.

They came up with the suggestion that she was pregnant with 2 babies from 2 different fathers and killed both babies. You couldn't make it up.

...and they had plenty of experience and success with making things up at this point. People turned a blind eye to the abuse as they presumed that there must be something to it in these cases. Nicky Kelly was languishing in jail at this point having been battered into confessing to a mail train robbery that he had nothing to do with.

You think things have changed?

We've moved on in time but you can rest assured that the same kind of heinous crimes, wrongful accusations, sweeping these under the carpet is still rife and probably at its worst in exactly the organisations we (are expected) to put our trust in.

The Catholic church might not have as much of a hold and power over people but you just have to look at the people in power over the last few decades and how the government has failed its nation again and again and again in so many ways, while lining their own pockets, those of their cronies and practically getting away with murder, without being held accountable, without any repercussions - a wrap on the knuckles, move them to a different department and retire off on a couple of different pensions, off you go

Absolutely agree with you, power corrupts, and it doesn't matter whose hands it's in. People will never change, it's human nature.

And there's no solution unfortunately exactly because power, money and greed will corrupt a lot of people and those it doesn't, won't ever get enough of a foothold to actually bring about any positive, recognisable changes that actually make a difference.

You have to either charge or release after 48 hours and they need to get it right this time. The DPP will decide whether to press charges or not.

I guess no admissions were made during questioning.

Yes sadly there's still judgement, even on here and even by our own gender.

Yet we have moved on, having children out of wedlock isn't shameful anymore, cohabiting is perfectly ok, we have same sex marriage (unfortunately lost civil partnership over it), the right of abortion etc.
