In the past, I suspect that record company executives were delighted when specific songs were banned by prudish national radio stations such as the BBC, because that vastly increased interest, sales and playtime on pirate stations which used the raunchy records to boost their listening figures, leading to increased advertising revenue.

The BBC and RTE are funded by a licence fee.
