1 hour gym followed by 30 min swim then 30 min steam room, sauna, jacuzzi 4 days each week.

4/5 hour hillwalk at weekends.

Rest of the time, apart from the odd play meet, is spent eating, drinking and sleeping.

Quite a balanced lifestyle actually.....

Most effective way to loose weight?? Cardio or weights??

Reply privatelyReply in forumReply +quote

"Most effective way to loose weight?? Cardio or weights?? "

Weight loss is generally achieved by 80% diet and 20% exercise.

Cardio burns calories but you have to do a lot to burn off excess weight, whereas resistance training (weights) builds muscle (while also burning calories) but muscle tissue uses/burns more energy than fatty tissue.

So build muscle and burn calories while eating a balanced diet where you are in deficit of energy needed

Agree with all of this. The saying "you can't out-train a poor diet" is spot-on. A combination of diet and weight training is key

I actually tried it once and wasn't pretty

Had a stone or more to lose, started the insanity workout while still eating crap and too much. I gained weight as well as bulking up and it wasn't pretty

I then reduced my calorie intake and ate a more balanced diet and ended up a very happy bunny

"Not long back in gym after having tendinitis in elbow, was going well but it's starting to flair up again

Mr"

Tendinitis is a bitch, and flare-ups so common when not rested and treated effectively and avoiding/reducing the cause.

Obviously consult a medical professional. A physio might be able to tape or strap it for you.

Keep icing it in the acute phase.

Eat foods high in omega 3 fatty acids like fatty fish (salmon, tuna). These are anti-inflammatory in nature. As are ginger, rosemary and Curcumin (found in the spice turmeric). All of these can also be taken as a supplement or used as an essential oil - either by inhalation (couple of drops in a diffuser or on a tissue placed under your pillow or on the dashboard of your car, for example) or added to a bath (just a few drops, not the whole bottle!!!) or add a couple of drops to a teaspoon of unscented lotion or oil and rub into the affected area - if you have no allergies.

Avoid highly inflammatory foods and drinks (refined foods, alcohol...).

I wish you a speedy recovery

Use dto go regularly enough pre covid. I was lucky I could get away during the work day.

Covid closed my gym (permanently as it happened) and sicne then I've worked out at home with limited equipment (hur hur)

I'd say I've lost strength but will probably sign up for a gym over the summer when there are no school drop offs to be done.

Completely stop and rest until all the pain goes away. Would suggest the working on strengthening the areas around the elbow, including joints and muscles in the forearm, bicep and triceps, before attempting to bench again.

Not saying this to anyone in particular, but you'd be surprised how much of a difference it makes to just eat properly.

Once you hit your protein goal and stay under your carbs and fats, it's actually really easy.

Then you just have to lift all the heavy stuff over and over again

Agreed

It HAS to be a lifestyle change, no fad diets or severe calorie restrictions, it must be sustainable (and enjoyable) for it to work long term.

3 days without food do a very good favour for your body, it’s taken out all toxins from it and you will lose a body fat ,( after 3 days if you not eat you will start lose a muscle mass ) then slowly start eating more healthy food( food that slowly release sugars in your body) and slowly start exercising ( not running one day a marathon and then give up) like start with 2 squads and 5 minutes walk gradually increase your exercises. And more importantly start to love yourself and your body , think more positive

I agree. Maybe the lady who advised can give a link to the professional who advised it? It sounds like the guy she is advising needs support in his efforts. Whether the advice is coming from a professional or not, the plan above is too extreme for someone like him.

My advice would be to join a slimming class to get that support and guidance. Trying to do something like the above is a recipe for failure for 99% of people.

In fairness, fasting and intermittent fasting has been shown to have a number of health benefits, not limited to but including improving insulin sensitivity (can help with type 2 diabetes), burning fat during fasting periods due to a metabolic switch (help with weight loss), can improve heart health, immunity and brain function.

There is plenty of information on the net, including studies in respected medical journals.

Personally, I would also think that 3 days without food is on the extreme side though I have done it, in order to kickstart different eating habits. I doubt a medical professional would approve.

My mother is a walking example of the benefits intermittent fasting has (in combination with more activity). At age 75, short and obese, type 2 diabetic, very, very limited kidney function, on blood pressure tablets, insulin, blood thinners, meds for fibromyalgia (18 different tablets a day) - she started walking regularly by acquiring a dog and intermittent fasting (eating every other day). Over the course of a year, she lost probably the better part of 2-3 stone, has drastically reduced the amount of insulin to inject and is off all meds except for one blood pressure tablet and during colder months on blood thinners (aspirin in this case).

Her doctors are delighted. She was told 15 years ago, she'd be on dialysis 5 years later. At now 78, she's healthier than she's never been!!!

Do consult a doctor or appropriate specialist if you're going down this road.

As for slimming clubs - I did Weight watchers years ago, very successfully. I know they're not for everyone.

I've heard about the Slimming World system and don't like the use around language - counting syns - I mean, WTF?! So you're trying to establish healthy eating habits and a healthy relationship with food but are made count your syns! So wrong on so many different levels!

Take out from your diet sugar, bread , pasta , potatoes, chips, but if you can not eat first 3 days only drink water it would help to restart your diet better. Don’t live to eat, eat to live. It’s sounds hard but possible, just believe in yourself

Did I read this right, don’t eat for 3 days only drink water?? That’s surely not good for you

My auntie had diabetes and she had no food or just a bit of food and she cured it for good, the doctor won’t believed and done a lot of tests and all negative.

I hope your mam will live healthy life for many many years more.

I have not an idea, I have an experience .An educated person would have more manners, I see what type of 2 degrees education you have. With your 2 degrees ,I hope you can read this: When it comes to diets, along with information about the calorie content of a product, you almost certainly hear the phrase “glycemic index” from time to time. This is a very important indicator for a healthy diet, characterizing changes in blood sugar levels when eating various foods. It is calculated individually, per 100 grams of the product. The reference substance is usually considered glucose (its GI is 100).

How is the glycemic index determined? Roughly speaking, the rate of absorption of the product is compared with the rate of absorption of glucose by the body. Accordingly, the longer the substance is absorbed, the slower the blood sugar level rises, the lower the glycemic index of the product.

Good luck with crap food and lazy lifestyle, definitely the best way to coexist.

Give me your point of so call “ crap , idiotic and dangerous advice “ at the moment only your manners shows up what you know.

Btw check out my profile to see how fat or dead I am on my pictures .

3 day fasting is extreme.

There are no toxins that will be expelled that won't be by eating well and controlling portion size whilst starting light to moderate exercise which is a much healthier start to a routine.

You were the one said "born to crawl, cannot fly", arrogant and patronising, and ultimately ignorant.

Save me your basic Google rehash, 3 days without food is dangerous. We are not talking about intermittent fasting here, you are talking about sustained fasting without food for 72 hours.

Now go ask Dr Google about ketoacidosis. Sustained fasting is dangerous and you coming on here and advocating it to anyone without knowing anyone's medical history is beyond ignorant and irresponsible. I will leave it there because to explain acid base balance, it's effect on metabolism and the body's electrolyte profile is completely beyond you.

No one advocated "crap food and a lazy lifestyle", but I am trying to keep some susceptible individuals out of Icu. I have no need to look at your profile, I know all I need to know about you. Workout Forum...

Hell yeah, work it out people,

A three day fast would do damage to any light underweight people, but the fatties could do with 5 or even 6 days fasting.

Fridges and food abundance are not part of ancient humanity and neither are fatties, I'm not talking about chunky or chubby people, I'm talking about cake munchers , crisp sneakers and diet fiends.

You guys just need to relax, take it easy and realize that everyone is different.

Rosie and Wylder, while you both raise great points and from my own research using commonly cited papers. Strong arguments can be made for both sides.

For fasting in particular, there are inherent dangers for specific persons predisposed to the likes of diabetes, low/high blood pressure, etc.

Without going into the minutiae, also keep in mind that fasting causes the balance of hormones responsible for satiety and hunger to fluctuate erratically, as well as cortisol levels.

The weight loss is largely temporary when you consider the massive rebound of Ghrelin as soon as you start to eat again is going to make most people binge eat.

The raised level of Cortisol from fasting has caused your metabolism to slow as well as increase your Leptin resistance.

Psychologically, this is not sustainable for the vast majority of people and is definitely more dangerous for those suffering from a wide variety of conditions, in comparison to gradual, habitual changes.

Fasting can be great and our bodies have some really cool mechanisms that we can only tap into when we put ourselves into a survival, but these always have caveats because of genetic predispositions and general lifestyle choices.

If anyone would like to discuss diet further, by all means, let's have a good aul back and forth.

P.s. - Sorry for the wall of text, there's just no simple way to talk about some of this stuff

Joining and maintaining a routine (any kind) in the gym will be one of the best things you can do.

From a diet POV, I will admit mine is not the best as i like to eat..alot! However when I wanted to cut some fat i found the best way was to prepare in advance some nice meals with approx calories and freeze so i can stick to the calorie count roughly and removed any fruit juice..chips breads etc.

I still had rice and pasta but even cutting out fruit juice, bread and chips made a huge difference in a short span of time. So maybe start with small changes and work from there

That's what most tightarses I know say.

No sure what gyms you've frequented in the past if that's your experience.

Anyway regardless, whatever anyone else does in a gym, (even if they do spend their time looking in the mirror) how has that any bearing on what you choose to do when you're there?? . It doesn't make any sense? Would you feel you had to join in looking in the mirror also to fit in?

You could go and do your own thing, and then it wouldn't be a waste.

Surely those with tight arses don't actually need to go to the gym....

"My diet is garbage

Take out from your diet sugar, bread , pasta , potatoes, chips, but if you can not eat first 3 days only drink water it would help to restart your diet better. Don’t live to eat, eat to live. It’s sounds hard but possible, just believe in yourself

Did I read this right, don’t eat for 3 days only drink water?? That’s surely not good for you

This is complete crap at a physiological level. It's actually idiotic and dangerous. "

Its not at all dangerous... not even that difficult. Its been used for for treatment of may health conditions for decades. It works and is very good for homeostasis.

IF vs. CR

The physical and biochemical parameters of IF vs. CR were analyzed in this study. The result of 10 studies showed that IF reduced participants' WC more than CR. The result was statistically significant with low heterogeneity (WMD = 2.29, 95% CI: 0.57–4.01, p = 0.009; I2 = 35%). Moreover, no difference was observed between IF and CR in terms of weight, glucose, and blood lipids between groups.

Thirteen studies investigated the effects of IF and non-intervention diet on insulin concentrations in participants. The correlated systematic analysis showed that the insulin levels after IF were significantly lower than those after the non-intervention diet (SMD = -0.21, 95% CI: 0.02–0.40, p = 0.03) (Figure 4B). In addition, the result of homeostasis model assessment insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) from 8 studies showed that IF could reduce insulin resistance more effectively compared to the non-intervention diet (WMD = 0.35, 95% CI: 0.04–0.65, p = 0.03; I2 = 0%)

According to the International Obesity Task Force (IOTF), a BMI of 25–30 units in adults is defined as being overweight, while a BMI greater than 30 in an individual is considered to be obese (1). Herein, subgroup analysis was performed specifically on patients with overweight or obesity (BMI = 25 kg/m2) among the included participants. The patients' physical and biochemical parameters of the IF vs. non-intervention diet are recorded in Table 5. The results showed that IF could significantly reduce insulin resistance compared with the non-intervention diet (HOMA-IR: WMD = 0.43, 95% CI: 0.04–0.83, p = 0.03). However, there was no significant difference in weight, body composition, and blood lipids. Moreover, the effectiveness of IF and CR was similar in patients with overweight or obesity. The correlated physical and biochemical parameters are recorded in

At present, more and more people in the world are suffering from metabolic diseases and obesity (1). Although IF was considered to be related to undesired outcomes, such as gout, arrhythmia, and peptic ulcer (55), it is still widely believed to be able to reduce weight, relive rheumatoid arthritis, and slow down aging (56, 57), even if they still disagreed on cancer (58, 59). In this study, IF was compared with a non-intervention diet and CR, respectively. In addition, subgroup analysis was conducted based on the pattern of IF, sex, and specific population, which narrowed the population within the overweight or obese population.

In our study, IF was found to have significant benefits in improving outcome indices for weight, FM, insulin, and blood lipids compared to a non-intervention diet. These results were similar to previous studies (6, 56, 60), indicating that IF can result in desirable weight loss and better health

"Workout Forum...

Namaste mutha-fuckas"

Well said ...

I would imagine most on here are referring to people in general , not to the minority who may have complications from adf or if.

Apples and oranges people's

"

If it’s was a Dr Google I would not even say a word, but I had to take a risk on my own hands going to get surgery or do something to get better, so as doctors control my health while I was fasting and explained me how to do it right. I don’t need to save my face as you said, I am not ashamed of my position just maybe I didn’t explain right, as English is my second language, so you don’t know anything about me to call my position “ idiotic and crap”

Take care .

P.s. - Sorry for the wall of text, there's just no simple way to talk about some of this stuff "

I think you touch on the biggest benefit of fasting... cell regenerate and or the consumption of damaged crap in the body ....

Autophagy rocks and is imo the most beneficial reason to fast.

Fasting in any form should always be discussed with your GP, particularly if you have underlying medical conditions.

Advising people willy nilly to take such drastic action when you don't know their medical history is simply negligent, careless and irresponsible!

And I am a supporter of fasting for its many health benefits.
