Well deserved tbh, every social occasion in the country revolves around alcohol. A lot of people depend on it for their "social skills".

As a non drinking Irishman I hate being stereotyped but we only have ourselves to blame for encouraging it over the years.

It was comedy. Fairly poor quality comedy, but comedy all the same. No biggie

We are a club that serves a large number of Irish customers. All we can say is that despite the relatively cheap cost of alcohol here, we have found Irish customers to be the most fun, yet the best behaved. They are welcome through our doors any time. Perhaps our view is slanted by the fact that all our customers are swingers and in our experience swingers are a cut above the rest. Our local newspaper reports a number of flights to the Canary Islands that need to be diverted because of misbehaving customers, but not once have we seen one of these flights departing from Ireland. Our opinion is that you're too hard on yourselves, the Irish reputation is good in our part of the world.

I just think who cares with all that's going on in the world we get the huff because we are stereotyped as alcoholics.

I've got to the stage with the media my eyes are constantly rolling. Hugh grant was rude to a presenter because she asked what he was wearing his reply ' a suit'. Get a fecking grip

The influence of that the Guinness marketing department have over successive governments is what pisses me off about all of that.

Brendan Behan was being interviewed in the US when the interviewer commented about how much the Guinness family had done for the people of Dublin. He replied that he wasn't so sure about that but that the people of Dublin had certainly done a lot for the Guinness family.

The Guinness marketing department most certainly wears the trousers in that relationship. The nonsense around the sanctity of the two part pour is all the proof that's needed to show that.

I don't think we drink anymore than many other countries, just look at Germany, Poland, belgium, all very similar.

The stereotype comes from the British, and done so on purpose. If you look at any British stage production from the 19th century, they always have a d*unk Irish character in order to depict us as a nation of irresponsible people who need looking after.

The same with newspapers and images or cartoons of d*unk, almost monster looking depictions of Irish people, all to support the view of us needing looking after.

Clearly our country has a lot more to offer, but as one poster said above, we like a drink but we can handle drink and keep it fun. We all deserve to let our hair down, and we do it better than most countries, but I dont think we do it more than most countries.

Not just the British when the Irish first emigrated to the US when US was relatively young country the Irish had a reputation as being d*unkards and violent at that and most of it was nonsensical, in recebt years we have seen an influx of Irish to Australia and they have a reputation as being functioning alcoholics, sure they work hard all week then drink enormous amounts at the weekend so we can't blame the British this time, there is no excuse for being a pig and not being able to drink in moderation

Your definition of moderation will differ from another's. People are entitled to get d*unk if they want .

Let people be young and let their hair down ... lord knows there is enought serious shit going on everywhere

The "d*unken Irish" are in joint sixth place (with Luxembourg and Slovakia) for pure alcohol consumption in liters according to alcohol.org.

They'll have to up their game a bit to catch up with the likes of Belarus, Czech Republic, France and Russia .

They do outdrink the Polish and Germans (in fairness, the Germans have to be up at 4am to put towels on the sun loungers - they need that extra hour sleep and there's 80 million of the feckers).

The country with the most serious problem for abusing alcohol is Russia, where life expectancy is low, and alcoholism and specifically addiction to cheap vodka causes massive social problems.

Ireland's issues with the abuse of alcohol are minor in comparison.

I don't drink alcohol at all, so the issue does not affect me.

From what I see alcohol is phenomenally expensive, mainly because of tax on it.

Abuse of alcohol or any other substance or any addictive behaviour is never a "minor" matter for those affected either directly or indirectly by the problem.
