I've never been a fan of celebrating my own birthdays but I will never mark another after this year's

Great idea.

The kids love it all. They mean everything to me and I try to be upbeat about it for them but I hit worst ever this year.

Not a memory or day I want to carry with me to cake & candles from now onward.

But you can't wipe and re-do bad days.

I am not unappreciative of efforts made to buy or give.

I get sad when people get me things they know or should know I genuinely dislike or would never use or have said often I don't want.

Like, "oh I really don't like that colour"

Cue a coat in that colour.

"I can't get massages any more"

Cue a gift card for a massage.

Like, wtf.

I find it hurtful to have it front and center that people don't see me or know me or pay attention.

Not fun.

My dad died the week before my 22nd, my uncle the day before my 40th, my mum 2 weeks before my 50th and my cousin a few days before my birthday this year.

I've never seen birthdays as celebrations

Pretty indifferent to my own birthday, it's not as though I remember being born, and it was a hell of a long time ago. I also don't believe in allowing a bad experience on a particular day to colour that date in perpetuity.

Do t forget... its the thought that counts ... the actual gift isn't the important thing ... its that they went and thought of you and got you something to mark your day ... I've gotten lots of shit presents... but there all great cause I got ... not cause of what they are !

I haven't had a birthday card or gift from my parents, sisters or brothers, since I was in my teens. My children never got cards or gifts from them since they were at primary school and my grandchildren received a babygrow when they were born and that was all.

Did I let this spoil birthdays? Hell no! I learned the few important people in my life who have my back and the rest I can do without.

My nearest and dearest know me. Some of them buy shit presents because its not one of the ways they are great at expressing their knowledge of me.

I buy some people shit presents but I know them very well in other ways. They wouldn't be my nearest and dearest otherwise.

So personally speaking I'd think of myself as overly sensitive about it if it made me sad or I found it hurtful.

If something truly dreadful happened, such as a bereavement, I can see how that might change a celebration date forever. As for other stuff? Nah. Gifts that are wide of the mark give us a giggle rather than being met with consternation, but appreciated nonetheless. People have their own stuff going on in their own lives so I don't expect them to remember every little detail about mine.

As far as birthday disasters go, I remember vividly, as a 6 year old sitting on my grandmother's hospital bed proudly showing her the new Sindy car I'd gotten for my birthday and, as a December baby, talking about Santa coming the next week and how I hoped she would be home from hospital so she could see the Sindy house I'd asked for. It was a conversation filled with love and joy. The next thing I knew I was scooped up off the bed by a nurse and whisked away. Although I didn't understand at the time, my grandmother had taken another heart attack. She never recovered, and died 3 weeks later. She was 43. And while all these years later it's still imprinted in my mind I choose to remember the good things about those last moments I got to spend with her on my birthday.

I think I've definitely learnt this as I've got older, I live cards and I'd often just post cards to friends because I see a card and liked if.

I turned 49 earlier this month and I'm treating each birthday the way I want to. We never know how many more we will get.

As for gifts it's the thought that counts and some people just don't think.

I had a birthday disaster turn into a life changing moment. I was getting the obligatory birthday ride from someone I had being meeting off Tinder. They let me down and I was complaining to a friend I wasn't going to get the birthday giddy up. She said I should check out a certain swingers site and I'd have to trouble getting the birthday leg over. I was sceptical and said to her get murdered and be all over the Sunday World I think not. But curious I joined and 402 complete strangers slide into my inbox that night offering to fulfill my birthday horn by letting me blow their candle...

I did say I appreciate the effort etc & I am the opposite of spoilt and hate the commercialisation of Christmas and such.

I suppose I have high hopes of people and see gifts as insightful.

I would just rather not get one than get a box ticker gift. Especially if it's a waste.

At the end of the day we all have different family dynamics and things land differently.
