Euthanasia

Don’t want to be morbid but sometimes our loved ones as they get older have no choice but to live in pain for the rest of their natural lives.

I for one would agree that it should be an option if the only result was death.

I personally didn’t do any searches on this subject but it’s just from my own personal experiences that I think it should be an option

What would you all think ??

Think I read there was over 3000 in Belgium last year. I guess you can never understand someone's pain unless you experience it yourself. If someone is in so much pain they believe the only solution is death who am I to tell them otherwise

I'm for the idea. Sometimes I wonder if I should build a machine for it and leave it at the bank of the against the day I'd want it. By then I probably won't be up to making it and I doubt it's going to become an accepted medical process here in my lifetime

I think it’s also an option in Switzerland

But I suppose it’s down to insurance companies at the end of the day

Was watching the lady from British bake off on the late late so that’s what sparked it too be honest

Hope this thread doesn’t upset anyone but it’s probably only meant for those that are in the same age group as I’am and don’t want their kids seeing them suffer in later life

It’s a hugely divisive topic that seems to mostly polarise opinions. I have a lot of experience with death both through my personal life and my career. I have seen and held many many people as they passed from this life. It’s not an easy moment to explain or articulate unless you have been there.

There have been times where death has been a release from terrible suffering and pain. I have spoken with some people who are suffering terminal illnesses and are absolutely ready to end it all. These people should be listened to and their opinions weighed up against the greater good. I personally don’t see the benefit to humanity of prolonging the suffering of anyone to appease someone else.

Bereavement is never an easy thing to deal with and is a very personal experience. There is no script. To let a loved one go “before their time” and enter bereavement “early” goes against the grain for so many people but in my opinion it’s for selfish reasons.

As someone who has been diagnosed with a debilitating disease, I think I'd like the choice. You wouldn't let an animal suffer. Why should we be any different?

I have being in the position of being with people when they pass away at times. And yes I think in certain situations there should be a way to help them pass especially in some of the cases I have seen where it's been a long and horrible death for the person.So yes I think in certain situations it should be allowed and I think people should be given the opportunity to choose when they are mentally capable of making the decision as well.

But it's also a situation that could be abused as well and unfortunately I have seen some vile people who would be more than willing to let someone to pass earlier than they should in order to gain from their death.

In theory yes it could be a good idea and help people pass peacefully and in no pain and with dignity.

But how it could be enforced so that it is never abused would be one of the biggest issues with it becoming legislation.

I'd like to see it brought in and hope it will be eventually

However the problem I have with it is what about people that just don't want to live anymore.

I'm not talking about people in pain or with an illness but those that just think

I'm old enough,Life's a bit of a struggle and it's getting harder to do ordinary things....time for a party and to say goodbye while I can

I've always wanted to go at a time of my chosing whether I'm sick or not and would I be allowed if I wasn't sick

I know in Belgium you get the choice ..

I understand the concern of possible abuse/misuse, however when you see how it's being legislated and conducted in other countries, it's a whole process you've to undergo before you might avail of the possibility. It's something you've to start organising when you're still in full capacity and third party influence is almost impossible. It's not a spur of the moment decision you can make today and tomorrow you're off with the angels.

"Eventually" As with all things this Bill was shelved in 2020 until a separate Oireachtas committee is set up to investigate.

So long as its done right.. id be up for it.

Im sure we've all had to do it for a pet at one stage or another.. loved as they are.

Wierd i can save my dog from pain but not my Granny..

Again, it'd need to be done right and organised by people much smarter than I, but it should be a possibility.

We already have euthanasia only it's not official, what do you think happens to terminally ill cancer patients, they get pumped with so much oxy to take their pain away that it kills them anyway

I'm all for it (with appropriate controls). I hope that if I'm ever in permanent intolerable pain, that some politician or holy Joe hasn't stuck their nose in and told me I can't end my pain. I feel its our duty to give those who as currently in that position the same choice.

In Switzerland the person has to be of sound mind to sign and be assessed before they will admit the person to the 'programme '. I lost my dad to cancer , fortunately it was quick(to quick for us) confirmed on a Thursday, passed on a tuseday. A few months later my sister rushed to hospital with a massive brain tumor, surgery unsuccessful as it continued to grow, and she never woke up from the surgery, hardest 3 weeks of my life sitting watching waiting for a loved ones body to give up, all food n fluids were stopped and she held on for 10days. I'd rather not to go through thst again or if it was me have those who care about me watch n wait

All for it as long as its carefully controlled about who its given to ,and how it ends. As someone who has seen a mother die in agony, and also an uncle, both of these facing a definite end, I would have helped my mother achieve this end if I had access to pills. I can never get the pain of her suffering out of my head and her begging us to help her die.
