Cross dresser and Transvestite are the same thing. The former is a more commonly used term in the US; the latter in the Western world. The term Transgender is pretty much a catch all word that covers all of us who may not always fall under our birth gender, be it temporary or permanent. Many people take it to refer to those who are transitioning or who have done so.

I could be wrong... but I always thought a transvestite was a man who wore traditionally female clothes whereas a cross dresser could be either sex wearing the clothes traditionally worn by the opposite sex. Or can a female be transvestite also?

Females can indeed be described as a transvestite/cross dresser. In practice the terms will almost never be applied to them, mainly because it's commonplace to see this in society.

I would hardly describe a woman who dresses in male clothing as a transvestite, considering women wear jeans, trainers, t shirts, suits etc every day and is commonplace. Who determines what is men's clothing? On the other hand, it's not commonplace for men to wear skirts, lingerie, high heels in public. Therefore describing a woman a cross dresser or TV is pointless. I would suggest the difference in cross dresser and TV, is that a cross dresser may only wear the clothing but not makeup and wig and the TV goes the whole hog.

Much of that depends on the reasons why she would do it, though. Certainly there is a far narrower window for a woman to “cross dress” over and beyond wearing female blazers/slacks/kex/footwear. Not to mention that it can be where they can don male wear/hair/shoes etc etc done without a degree of social conflict or derision; however it very occasionally happens where a female may be described as one. I digress.

However to get back to the main point in question, there isn’t any difference between the terms TV and CD. Some use your rationale and for both term as it happens.

As such either one is fine whatever you feel cool saying
