I'm one of those who is slightly weirded out by kissing someone on the mouth other than my partner. The usual comments are "it must be cold/mechanical/blah blah" but my experiences have been quite the opposite.

Himself here. Kissing IS a turn on in it's own right... but it can be difficult to stop at kissing if other things are a possibility,

The reason kissing is such a great thing is gets both bodies ready for sex. Thats its function after all.
