Been to all except salzburg and Zagreb (used to have a fun job)

Budapest baths as mentioned, few cool museums even if you're not a history buff just off the wall stuff.

Venice the gondolas of course, vienna schonbron Palace (spelling probably wrong)

And ljubljana you absolutely most definitely have to do a day trip to Lake bled and postonja caves, it's an all in 1 day trip.

Would you mind telling me who you booked it through or what website?

I've been thinking of treating myself to a holiday that isn't a week in Spain or Portugal this year

Depends what you are into and how long are you planning to stay in each city.

I was in Vieanna and Budapest recently and if you don't have enough of time to visit any of the museums or galleries, just day long stroll around the city center is all what you need. the historical center of Budapest isn't that large, so walk from the Old Central Market to the Pairlament and then take a metro to the other side up to the Castle quarters. Have ice cream and coffee along the way

Drove around Europe last year. Took in 9 countries. Was a great experience. I'd highly recommend it to anyone.

Vienna is the same, casual strall inside the 'ring' and you will see most of the historical Imperial town - Stefansdome, Hofburg and such...

Ljubljana, was there when they were opening McDonals there I was working hard, so remember only late evening strolls, lovely 'white' town with river and many bridges, but, that was in the mid 90's

Venice is trulya fantastic place to visit, but be sure to book your place to stay as far in advance as possible; and try to visit the more remote parts of the city, where ordinary venetians live and work.

The new sea barrier to protect Venice from storm surges and rising sea level in the Adriatic is worth seeing; a marvel of engineering ingenuity but with some flaws.

If you are in the Salzburg area, try to visit Hitlers former retreat, Eagle's Nest at Berchtesgaden in the Ober Salzburg. The road to the top is awesome

If you are in the Munich area, I would recommend a long visit to Dachau, the first concentration camp that was built in 1933. It changed my view of human beings when I first went there in 1978.

I did Interail twice, and have been actively giving consideration to another trip; a great way to meet people.

Although Dachau was the first Nazi concentration camp, opened in 1933 when Hitler came to power, it was not specifically designed to exterminate its occupants although over 30,000 died there.

Auschwitz, Treblinka, Sobibor, Belsen and other infamous facilities were pure death camps; industrialised murder facilities to kill Jews, Gypsies homosexuals, and Jehovah's Witnesses, to name a few from Hitler's target list if irrational hatred and persecution.

If you are in Eastern Europe they are worth making the trip to these remote locations.

Thanks everyone for your tips. I'm limited to a mere day or 2 in most places so won't get much chance to travel too far. I booked my accommodation centrally so hopefully will get to walk most places.

I definitely will aim for Lake bled. Any towns around Zagreb you'd recommend more especially on the coastline.

Thanks

Split and zadar are really cool forgot which one has the sea organ built into the pier and it plays a tune as the water laps against it.

And dubrovnik is further down the coast then.

If you are in any of the larger 'permissive' cities in Europe, such as Hamburg or Amsterdam, a walkthru the Red Light districts is an education, principally about trafficking and gross exploitation of very vulnerable foreign ladies, and some locals too.

These areas are largely controlled by indigenous Mafia, with violence.

It is a phenomenon that is unseen in Ireland, north or south. Worth a visit!

Clearly, I don't know the style of accommodation you prefer, but it is always useful to have an international youth hostel card; the quality of youth hostels in Europe is exceptionally high.

Useful to have if you are in advertently caught short; accommodation wise!

I appreciate the advice. I've booked ahead with accommodation for the first week then free wheeling as we have interrail so don't want to plan too much..

Excited now..

"Thanks everyone. I've taken notes. So hopefully I'll come back with lots of stories and pics... "

I'm over there interrailing from 3rd June but I'm going to concentrate on central rather than Eastern and hit most of the alpine scenic route trains in Switzerland, Italy and Austria.

I had planned to do a driving holiday but finding a car hire firm in Bergamo was an absolute nightmare with the horror story reviews they all have so I'll plump for the interrail pass instead. Gonna get the global seniors pass for 22 days I think and gib the return flight off in place of the train.

Happy to compare notes if you want to via DM as at one stage, when I had planned to drive I was considering Budapest, Bucharest, Sofia, Zagreb and Prague but I'm getting swayed by the scenic routes which I've wanted to do since my teens and maybe a jaunt to Cap D'Adge too possibly.

Returned from my trip. It waa amazing. The quality of the trains vary greatly. So firstly prepare for that. Not all have charge points and wifi.

Never paid for a reserved seat and seemed to work out OK even during peak time Easter.

Enjoy I went to most of the same as you.

Perhaps you could outline the route you took; with the highpoints and low points.

Did you make contact with any like-minded folk, en route?

Just off on my first solo trip tomorrow morning. Train to Lancaster, then Barrow, Carlisle and Glasgow via Dumfries. Returning Thursday via Wemyss Bay, the Settle and Carlisle line to Leeds and then back to London. Looking at doing London to Wick, the Rhine Valley, the Harz Mountain Railway, possibly Penzance and maybe another couple of days abroad. Very excited!

I had a thought the trains would be a bit hit and miss.

Did you opt for the 1st class global? I did wonder if it would be worth it for wifi and charge points (USB or euro adapter connection?) due to poorer quality trains on provincial routes in lesser travelled countries.

Any advice or tips you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
