I have a pathological fear of violence because of incidents in the past when I was attacked.

There has been yet another attack on a member of the Guards in Dublin, and news reports of murders seem to be increasingly frequent.

Do you think that Ireland or particular segments of Irish society now resort to violence more readily than in the past?

The number of murders in Ireland is down a bit over the last 10 years or so. There is a bit of a bump though in the last year or so which is probably the covid effect. Over the last 30 years or so its hovered around 1 murder per 100,000 people per year, but its a little below that right now.

Possibly increased media coverage has made us more aware of the underlying level of violence that is present here as in most societies.

Anger, jealousy, rivalry, have always existed in human situations and have lead to crimes of passion.

It is when you add in organised crime and in particular drug dealing that the statistics around violence start to spiral.

Without the ongoing work of the Garda and CAB we would be in a much worse situation.

Going to sound old now but all my life I've had respect for the Gardai....always moved on if we hanging around in gangs wrecking someone's peace and quiet as teenagers

Now with social media the kids take out their phones and call them cunts to get a reaction or attack them like fermoy on Thursday evening

Some parts of Dublin are no go area's with gangs of feral kids actually killing people

Not sure what the solution is

There are a number of possible issues.

Things may have been as bad years ago but without phones and social media we just never heard about it.

The group dynamic, where people act differently in a group to how the act as individuals, used to require the presence of a group. Nowadays it doesn't require the same physical numbers as the group can be watching from a distance online so you get that effect with less numbers. Not sure about this but it's a theory.

Also, there's way more sensationalism than there was in my youth. I've had stories told to me recently as fact by apparently reasonable people that nobody would've accepted without proof a decade or more ago. The 15 year old girl who died in the tent in Clondalkin is one, it didn't happen. Numerous other facts are based around videos of the person doing the filming shouting a narrative but the actual video doesn't show what they're claiming is happening.

The world is fucked up at the moment.

Embrace your age and use your experience to your advantage.

Showing my age I remember running battles between rival street gangs in my youth in a town not far from Fermoy.

Violence has always existed but is more publicised now.

Maybe not a bad thing to make society aware and maybe start to eradicate the causes.

Lack of youth facilities is one thing that could be addressed.

More playing pitches, basketball courts, gyms, swimming pools etc. instead of miles of under utilised cycle lanes might help.

Haven't noticed much difference personally. In the two decades I've regularly been in the city centre I can't say I've noticed much difference in violence and my perceived fear hasnt changed either. It's still an extremely safe city as modrern urban cities go. You'll find trouble easily if you want to, but can just as easily avoid it for the most part.

Since I can remember violence is commonplace in Irish society, sure this country was founded upon bloodshed, 20 years ago you could be mugged and beaten up today it's the same, murders and other horrific crimes are and always were part of life

Drugs and entitlement have ruined this country if i could be minister of justice for maybe 2 years with full backing you would be able to leave your doors open. 24/7..judges are flawed and prison system not up to scratch

From personal experiences and observations in many diverse environments where violent people are found, I have concluded that many people today are much more inclined to resort to violence that in the past.

There is a broad range of reasons for this: the famous Gesch study found that many people in prison and especially in youth detention facilities are nutritionally deficient, but when they were give very quality supplements, specifically Foreceval and Efamol, their propensity for violent behaviour fell by over 30%, a significant statistical reduction.

Food quality has declined due to being processed; raw quality foods are more nutritious.

Many People in poor, socio-economically deprived areas consume low quality foods, in addition to suffering other disadvantages.

You can read all the studies ever written but I prefer to speak from experience.

Street level violence where I've lived all my life is vastly reduced from what it was like in the 70s and 80s and I don't include terrorism related violence.

There are isolated incidents but across the board it's nowhere near as bad as it used to be.

I have a friend in the PSNI who claims that there is a definite rise in domestic violence but only a small percentage of incidents he has to deal with involve street violence.

Funny enough, its the opposite (from experience) where I live. The fear factor of being caught seems to have gone and the incidents seem to be more violent. More brazen and often in the open.

Back in the day of course we had guys thumping the heads of each other but now its knives etc.

In my experience,,, tug crime and fights outside pubs etc are down cause there are far more people willing to split you open these days .

Violent crime is up ... drug crime is up .... rehabilitation is shit ... community forgiveness is almost non existence.

Here's a related stat.

There were 23,229 recorded attempts to kill, threats to kill, harassments and other related offences in the 12 months up to September of this year. This figure exceeds even pre-pandemic figures of 2018 (19,748) and 2019 (21,662).

What is shocking is that this increase has happened all over the world as a result of the same factors, main one being increasing mim wage .

I know , it dosnt seem sensible however the numbers don't lie ...

Please please watch the following. This man is the leading in his field and speaks with statistical facts ... its refreshing... yet upsetting. I have always been lead to believe that the poor are poor and unhappy due tk the rich and spreading it would repair that ... factually and economically that wrong
