Hi was anyone listening to news talk lunchtime show chatting about bullying in hse.

I heard the tail end of it.

First off, I'm not surprised.

Secondly, it's nothing new.

Finally, as in all public sector organisations, there are people promoted to management positions that are 1) incompetent 2) bullies 3) narcs 4) narcs in apprenticeship.

There are a lot other things going on besides that.

Management like to offer the "supports' - the reality is it's only provided because the safety, health and work act says they need to provide it.

Most work places have an employee assistance service. I would suggest anyone affected by this should see them to TALK...which can be hard for many.

I heard it. I couldn't help think that in the private sector the bullied employee would go off with stress long term and then end up getting fired.. then sue for a small fortune

In my experience its bullies who end up in positions of management and if they weren't bullies beforehand they soon become one, some people can't handle power and it goes straight to their heads and it quickly turns to nastiness

That can be true.

That's why its important they people are aware of their rights.

I had a situation like that a few years back and I was fortunate to make a complete tit out of the individual when it was escalated.

Didn't stay long in that job after (jumped ship as quickly as possible) because I knew I was marked

I have had one or two long term jobs and a few short term and there is always a bully in there somewhere at any rung of the ladder. Most in the workplace move on to a different target if confronted (that’s what bullies do!!) and others don’t.

What does work is getting any and all affected together along with those that witness it and doing something about it. Extremely hard to get everyone on board, but it generally works.

Unfortunately bullying is insidious and it’s very difficult to prove it’s going on, unless you have witnesses or something in writing. Most people who are bullies are careful not to leave any traces, which leaves the victim in a tough situation if they make a complaint.
