Excrement was thrown over 2 TDs yesterday. In the U.K. and the US behaviours towards TDs have escalated massively including fatal acts. Is there a risk of this happening in Ireland ?

Fwiw I do think that the hugely polarised discussions on social media and other platforms don’t help .

Absolutely there is a chance of this happening here. People protested outside a TDs home with his kids inside and barricaded another inside her car.

Agree or be disgusted by their actions and policies there needs to be a line clearly drawn about what's an acceptable protest

Which two TD's did that happen to?

It's more than a bit sickening that it's happening to people. Hard enough to get good people to stand in politics without scaring them off with that shit. Pun intended

Anne Rabbitte was one of them anyway.

As was mentioned elsewhere - the shit really has hit the Anne.

Whilst totally unacceptable I do admire the resolve of someone willing to carry a heap of shite around in their pocket, get themselves all shitty just to throw shit at a person they’ve never personally met or intended to personally do you harm

There's always a heap of shite in my pockets. Small change, gum wrappers, odd mystery keys, a Costa Coffee loyalty card, in case someone agrees to a coffee meet, packet of condoms....we live in hope.

And that's only the trousers pockets.

Jacket pockets....don't even go there.

I carry bags of shite every time I walk the dog in fairness but I wouldn't throw them at anyone

I haven't a clue what the people were protesting over but I do know that there's a lot of anger from ordinary decent people who are pinned to their collar and think politicans aren't listening and are starting to listen to grifters and agitators on Twitter and Facebook

So between the refugees, the pyrite houses, the HSE,Inflation, cost of living, affordable houses something is going to blow up and I genuinely feel that a politician is going to get attacked or even badly hurt because no one seems to be listening

Its just a matter of when

While the violent attacks and protests outside peoples homes are just unacceptable in a democratic society.... There's something so satisfying about seeing them get a milkshake right in their smug face

I do think being a politician is now seen as a career in itself rather than a civic duty, a lot of todays politicians have never held a job outside politics and I do believe that they don’t really care about solving big issues and they’re more concerned about getting their arse a seat at the next election

You can be assured there is continuous assessment of the risks to all public figures in Ireland by An Garda Siochana; but having studied this topic, in depth, the greatest risk comes from so-called Lone Wolves, who are now known as Lone Actors, who do not 'leak' their intentions, to other members of their cohort, specifically for the reason that they act alone, 'under the radar'.

All police and security services worldwide have a network of informants who keep their handlers aware of threats to public figures; this intelligence is passed to CPOs: Close Protection Officers.

Most threats are mitigated long before they are ever realised!

This is absolutely unacceptable in any sphere of life. It's assault. No-one, public figure or not, should be subjected to intimidation or abuse like this.

The excrement was dry cow dung sealed in ziplock bags. He tossed/threw them at the two TDs during a meeting about turning farm waste into bio energy.

Violence is not the way forward but with tensions running so high in the entire country at the minute and the gap between the haves and the have nots ever increasing, it’s quickly becoming a reality. Joan Burtons farcical false imprisonment did nothing for her or her colleagues. It showed that politicians are willing to say anything to get up on the ordinary citizens. Anger will boil over.

It’s a terrible reflection on society that this bagged manure has had more mainstream media coverage than the 16 year old girl who died on a hospital trolley waiting for treatment.

Would anyone here accept a job that some thing is thrown at them. It was a criminal act of assault in the eyes of the law. The lady was scared by the incident and did not speak at the meeting and felt scared going to her car. The guy that did it sat down looking at her throughout the meeting and was not challenged or asked to leave. It was an assault on an innocent woman at the end of the day. We dehumanise politicians as normal everyday. It’s just not right we have a lot in this country to be proud of including or freedom of speech but this was the act of a thug

Ah sure nurses and doctors have shite flung at them all the time and the patients wouldn’t be kind enough to bag it up beforehand

I’m not saying it’s alright to fling shite at anyone but suffering is relative. I’m sure the TDs will be right as rain in no time and perhaps have a bit more compassion for healthcare professionals for whom that’s a daily occurrence

Media hyperbole gave the impression of fecal matter being thrown at the female politicians, but it was just bagged dried matter!

Totally agree. How was he allowed to continue to attend the meeting ? In what way is that acceptable ? Do you only get flung out if it’s fresh poo ? A man throwing this at a woman ?

This idiot was protesting the building of a biogas facility. So you would assume he attacked 2 politicians who forced through the plans for this facility etc. But wait a second he actually attacked 2 tds who also oppose the same biogas facility and were at a meeting to discuss what to do about it. So now it's not only people you disagree with that threaten and attack our politicians it's also their supporters attacking them but still we see people cheering on these re threads saying politicians deserve it.

What will all these whingers do when our taxes are being spent providing security officers for every td ,their wife's and kids because re threads who more than likely haven't the intelligence of the animals that gave them the manure keep attacking politicians.

I'm inclined to think that if your argument requires the throwing of a bag of shit to make it then you've already lost the argument.

From a practical point of view, if you start that then you remove the moderates from your support base. Reducing the numbers on your side is rarely helpful to anyone's position.
