Just watched a very moving show on TG4 - Grainne Seoige exploring how women experience menopause in Ireland past and present. With the aim of instigating a national information campaign.

She discovered there are rocks in west galway named after local women who were lost in despair

R.I.P.

Thank God its been openly talked about and woman chatting about it,not living in silence.

My advice to any woman is go to doctor and demand what ever you need don't take no for an answer ,you know your own body. HRT changed my life and I will sing it from the tree tops

My doctor told me she's dreading her own menopause, the empathy is all well and good but it didn't fill me with confidence as to her faith in science

An ex of mine had all the signs of the peri-menopause in her late 30s (history of early menopause in her family). I gently tried to steer her towards making a doctors appointment. She was very reluctant and told me I was making shite up, she made an appointment and the doctor had no intrest and keep saying she was to young and tried to put her on anti depression medication. Bumped into her a couple of years ago right before lockdown, she went through the full menopause by 43. Alot more needs to be done to educate people about the peri-menopause and the help that is out there.

Speaking to a few nurses who have said they are genuinely concerned by the lack of knowledge that so many doctors have on certain things.

Coupled with a lack of empathy it's probably not surprising that women are reluctant to approach for advice or guidance.

Friends of mine had their last periods in their 30s and early 40s, it's fair to say that a lot of doctors haven't a clue.

There's still some prudish air hanging around in some gp practices, especially when it comes to physical examination.

Also experienced some weird questioning by more than one practitioner (query going from suggested pregnancy straight to menopause in seconds ) and some rather unsetting scaremongering before a hysteroscopy, drawing on the worst outcome only.

Anyhow I'm lucky so far, vitamin D supplements and opening the window in the evening does the trick.

I honestly think my body has been peri menopause for 10 years give or take, I have had a lot of the symptoms for years but everytime I went to the doc was told lose weight and secondly here's some antidepressants.

Finally this year a new female doc in my clinic the minute I mentioned menopause she was so open about it and the different options available. I'm on hrt over 5 months now and the difference is unreal.

Ladies if you doctor brushes you off, ask him/her do they know much about the menopause , feck it we are paying them enough

So sorry to hear that. I really think doctors need a re-education on the issues that can affect a woman as the age. That poor lady must of been through he'll and to see no way out other than ending her life, so medical professionals have her loss on there hands

Only about 20% of women are lucky enough to go through menopause without it being a significant impact on their lives.

Companies are trying to create the holy grail of therapies to help women, but the truth is what works for one woman will not necessarily work for another.

As men we need to listen to them,and really listen to them and not just try to "fix" things as men are conditioned to do.

For what women sacrifice in their lives to bring new life and everything they suffer, to then have to go through menopause is just so unfair from what I can see.

It's horrendous. I guess we were all supposed to die younger in the natural order of things.

Ms Lolly,so so sorry to hear this and condolences to you .I had a year and a half of utter hell,I watched Davina McCalls documentary and went to doctor armed with information. I refused to leave until he prescribed me HRT.Within 48hrs I could feel a huge charge. I know its not for everyone but that's my story. It really saved my sanity.

So far I've been lucky with it but so many have an awful time with the menopause.

I would be pretty reluctant to go on hrt due to family history but it something that I will talk to my doctor about if it gets worse.

We need more doctors in this field doctors out there don't know enough about it!! 2 yrs after full hysterectomy and i had to go ask for help no one offered any advice . Hrt is a god send ..And now it's in short supply all over the country madness

Have you looked at natural treaemts, if you are in Facebook there are a few good menopause groups that give options etc

I work with a lot of women & it breaks my heart how much women resist that some of the symptoms they are having may be due to perimenopause. It's not surprising with terms being branded at women as hormonal & historical. Menopause itself is simple enough it's the up to 12 years of peri that I see most of real trouble. It's great there is so much more coming out about it all now & hopefully we will stop normalising our problems because they are common.

Depending on which symptoms are most troublesome for you, alternative treatments or some other conventional medication may help.

Oh my god. I am so sorry but I am not surprised.

I have two particular clients at the moment that I have been worried they might do something out of desperation, who have been in and out of doctors only to be told their bloods are fine. A big problem is a contraception masking symptoms which otherwise would have definitely made the doctors look at hormones. I've had to write letters to doctors & or give the ladies the info they need to demand help. These two particular ladies are 54 & 55 respectively.. like what fucking age does the doctors think their hormones are to start fluctuating & declining.

I think the life stage coincides with so many other things and modern life is very wearing now too so many symptoms get attributed to fatigue or sadness at an empty nest or just feeling off that you're getting older.

Many, such as brain fog, aren't widely known as symptoms of menopause.

You ask people to think of menopause and most would be hard pushed to list anything beyond hot flushes, night sweats and maybe hair loss...

I started to notice symptoms of perimenopause a few months ago and I'm sure there were signs there before that I didn't notice. I tried talking to doctors but it was a waste of time. A friend suggested that I try "Menomin" by cleanmarine and it has been a game changer. The aches & pains have eased and my mood and tiredness is much better. It is a natural supplement and can be bought over the counter. Worth a try if you can't or don't want to go straight to hrt.

There are over 30 common symptoms of peri-menopause. It can also aggravate existing conditions such as allergies and auto - immune disease. Additionally, the loss of oestrogen raises the risk of heart disease, stroke and osteoporosis.

There's no doubt about it but women have an awful lot of stuff going on or having to deal with in their lives , all of what you've mentioned and you can throw childbirth in there as well .

Great to see it being discussed in here, well done for bring it up Rubs, I’m sure lots have seen friends and family (and perhaps themselves) suffer needlessly in silence, there seems to be a need for a lot more education on the subject.
