Would any of the tech heads know how plausible or likely it is for someone to share a private picture online of someone by only knowing their phone number? The same person doesn’t have Facebook or any social media plus they didn’t give them their real name…..asking for a friend no genuinely I am, thanks in advance.

Phone numbers are linked into anything owned by Meta....so Instagram or Whatsapp

Also sometimes if you google a phone number the person who uses it shows in the results if its a company phone

It can also show up in websites that sell items

It can be very easy to follow someone around the internet with their phone number and then real name and photo can be found

It'd be useful to know if they ever met in person or if it was all online.

Obviously there are hackers who could tell you what you ate for breakfast on 23June2009 but there are also physical hacks to clone or hack devices if they were together. Or they could have peeked an unlock pin and got up to mischief on their phone.

It's only limited by the skill of the hacker basically.

Most often though, it's carelessness, chance and coincidence that lands personal info in the hands of another

All I’ve been told is they chatted to the person on Locanto, swapped numbers, she then video called him and basically offered sex and then sent a screenshot of the video call and threatened to go public with it. She has only his number, not even a name and he also doesn’t have any social media.

Tell him to block the phone number from his phone and whatsapp

Be prepared for them using a different number to ring him and threaten him with a fine that goes up everyday leaving messages and threats

Tell him to delete the messages they leave

They'll give up eventually

Tell him report it, " she" doesn't have his consent to share his pic do its a crime. Tell them to feck off, blo k the number on all.

Lesson learned be careful who you share pics with if you getting up to anything naughty don't show your face. Majority of these black mailer give up when you stand up to them, as they trying to black mail a few everyday and all they need is one or two to fall for it.

Just a slightly more elaborate version of the bl*ckmail email scam.

Haven't had one in ages until this week.

Apparently they have videos of me taken on a webcam I don't own looking at porn sites I've never heard of and doing things I haven't the energy to do.

It's a numbers game.

Ah locanto, taking over from the old Facebook messenger scam. All he needs to do is text back the number saying your contacting the gaurds. That number is a pay as you go number or a voice over ip number. They will immediately just stop.

f his number doesn't show any information about him with a Google search then I'd say he's safe. But as others said, I would just block the number if I was him. They might try with a few other numbers but will give up eventually. Tell him no DoneDeal ads, etc with that number for the time being
