"Due to antimicrobial resistance alot of bacteria infections are mutating and antibiotics are no longer working agents them due to been over prescribed. Doctors use to give out antibiotics for sport and people taking them for the slightest illness. " The extraordinary amount of antibiotics given to animals which are (overly) intensively farmed is a very worrying phenomenon. This is a serious issue worldwide and especially in China, Brazil, etc. Antibiotics that are held in reserve, for worst infections are very few. In Russia and former eastern bloc countries, phages, obtained from sewage outflows, are more widely used but are more targetted. Antibiotics kill both bad and beneficial bacteria, in the human gut. This depletes the recipient's microbiome, which has long term health implications. We ourselves, and the medical profession should use antibiotics much more sparingly to protect this miraculous resource, that is being abused.

"Interesting tread. I'm 3 week in myself but still barking. Didn't bother going back to the Dr for more pills after the first course didn't shift it. They say time is a great healer" Some people whose systems are immuno-suppressed need medical intervention to assist them back into homeostasis.

First time I have ever been told that. " Yes, and it was the nurse who told you. Doctors don't get this important information as part of their training. They're objective is to get rid of the infection through the use of antibiotics. That's important of course but it's also important to know that the antibiotics do serious damage to your good gut bacteria. Just an fyi to follow, if anyone is prone to UTI and are regularly prescribed antibiotics for same, then try taking a supplement called D-Mannose. This is very effective at helping treat a UTI and taking daily helps prevent recurring infections. It's a simple sugar extract from cranberries. L

I was on course after course of antibiotics for 8 months about 16 or 17 years ago and never a mention of probiotics. My gut health is shit now as a result and can't process dairy or sugars. It was a woman in a health food store who asked why I hadn't been advised to take probiotics 7 or 8 years after the event.
