"Problem is so many left trades back in the recession and havent been replaced. I'm blocklaying and constantly looking for men. I know 4 blocklayer of which 3 are making chocolate in Cadburys and one is a postman. You'll sooner see a unicorn than an apprentice blocklayer " Comforting in a way to hear it's a multitude of trades and not just the eternally elusive electrician Comforting but also discomforting of course

"I'd have much preferred to learn a trade than what I do now. I always loved working in the building sites with my dad but when it came to it, it wasn't a ladies job! He was very old school. I cam still mix cement, weild a shovel as good as any man, I'd say my actual block laying skill need some up skilling again but I'd never be afraid to do my own thing. " Good enough for me. So few of us we are basically working unicorns Hubby Ah I know, just venting, to be fair I know a plumber who comes round after the day job....." Ah I’m only messing. But myself and anyone I know in the game is flat out. Not enough hours in the week to get through the work. And that’s without emergency work thrown into the mix. I can’t complain,I love it. But do understand the frustration. Very few young lads want to take trades up now. Unfortunately there’s still a stigma around doing an apprenticeship. But I’ll never look back. Never been out of work and can use my skills anywhere in the world. Multi-skilled tradesman

"I posted in another thread last week about getting a quote for minor roof repairs in February costing £600 but he couldn't do it for 6 months. Came back last week ready to do the work but it's now £1600. Materials in February were £200 and they're now £255 so he's just taking the piss. Contacted another contractor and they are doing the job next week for £730. Some tradesmen are only skilled in ensuring they won't get any repeat business." The reason he priced it so high is because he didn’t want the job or that if was to do it he was making sure he got well paid for it to take him away from whatever run of work he had lined up at the time. Looking for a tradesman is the same as buying a car. Shop around a bit first.

One of them wanted paid in full up front so he got told to feck off and I chose this guy because of reviews on his website. If he'd put his prices up by 20% in line with the increased cost of the materials that would have been ok. He decided to stick his arm in. I went back to his website at the weekend and the tone of all the reviews have changed completely with most people now saying they would never deal with him again because of how much he had bumped their quotes so based on what you are saying there must be a lot of work he doesn't want.

"I guess we lost a fair amount of tradesmen in the last recession, after the credit crash, when we exported the young ones again. (for those ones with short term memory FF and FG rammed this lovely country into the ground in 2008/9) Anyhow time to draw up an apprenticeship sceme that is highly regarded and a valid alternative to college/uni. This works very" I tried registering an apprentice a few years ago and I got a look at how the coarse looks now and it’s basically the exact same as what I did 20 years ago. I know you need to know the basics but it’s high time it’s modernised.

"I am a carpenter some days my phone could ring 10 times an hour that's why we don't answer we can only do so much work there is not enough tradesmen in the country because mammy and daddy want the sons and daughters going to collage so they can boost about it to their friends. There will be more doctors and scientists in Ireland than painters builders, electrican plumbers etc . Let your kids do what ever job they want not what you think they should do . There is big money in being a trades man as we are so scarcs we can all most charge what we want and get it " Came here to say this, kids were discouraged from taking an apprenticeship and trades lost their status. I’m so happy I chose a trade over college after school.

"...well in other countries. (Clumsy fingers )" Agreed , apprenticeships are not regarded highly enough here, unlike Scandinavia and central Europe where they are recognised on a par with any college/university degree.
