Got a quote from my electrician for my kitchen. I nearly fell of the chair when I looked at it. It's about 3 times what I paid for similar work before and during the pandemic.

Is my electrician on a trip or is this the 'new normal' price level in the building sector?

Anyhow he can f*** right off, I rather live with some plugboards and quirky placed light switches.

Would be interesting to see if there's similar experiences.

I had 3 big jobs I needed done this year.

One of them was completed within 2 weeks of contacting a contractor at a very reasonable price.

A second job was quoted at £800 in April and was to be finished within 6 weeks. They came back to me in July and said the job would now be £1600 so I told them to shove it. Two other contractors have been out and measured up in July and are not responding to calls for the quote.

A third job was quoted at £600 in February and a site visit wasn't required because it was a set price for a semi-detached house. The only issue was he couldn't do it until September.

Got a message yesterday to say he was ready to to the job but it would now cost £1600.

I know material costs have gone up but not by 100-150% so at this stage some people are sticking their arm in.

The prices of cable and electrical switchgear is gone through the roof. Wholesalers will only stand over a price for 12 hours as the prices are fluctuating so much.

Id say its a combination of a few things

Some timber has doubled in price this year

Steel is up about 70 % in a year so that's definitely effecting material prices on some jobs and thats if the materials are available at all

Yes contractors have put up their rates ....sometimes so they don't get the work as they're so busy

I put up my prices by 100% for some customers who screwed me on price or payment the last time I did work for them....most still go ahead with me

The cost of living hasn't trippled . and labor shouldn't either ... price gouging simple ... just like some hotels ... just find contractors with morals ... lots of them still out there

It’s as simple as this supply and demand, I was self employed for 10 years came through the whole 2008 crash when prices plummeted through the floor, then a few years later it started creeping up and up and everyone wants their “specialist” piece for their homes now.

You can literally price a job now in the knowledge that it’s very high and if you don’t get it then it’s no loss as it’s so busy out there now, but when you get the high priced job then you are winning and making great profit on that job.

All I can recommend is ask people who they deal with, at least then you can say that they have come recommended and then they might just be willing to give you a reasonable price.

Materials have gone up but not by that much, it’s the same as hotels now, SUPPLY AND DEMAND.

Yeah, that's what I read from his quote, he doesn't want to do it because he's got plenty of work already unless I pay over the odds.

Even if I had the money, I don't like to be ripped off so there's no way that I'd even consider that.

Anyhow he just lost a longterm client that has plenty of work to come in the future. I'm aware there's tons of work out there but there's dark clouds on the horizon already. So actions/quotes like this can badly backfire in the future. Much more honest would be to say 'can't do it, too busy'.

The market should take care of this. Extraordinary pricing and large payouts will lead to more entering the business and should lead to an increase in supply. We just need to show the wannabe influencers that they can make good money being a sparky instead.

Yep. Looking for a quote for an electric shower and the cable to attach it to the fusebox cost more than the shower unit

I said virtually all of this on a FB business page where contractors were complaining about the number of people contacting them and their lack of patience.

When I pointed out that they were using social media to advertise their business so they couldn't very well complain when people contacted them that way I though for a minute I was back on fab.

One business owner called me an entitled prick for using FB as a way of finding contractors in the first place and when I said if someone can't do a job for any reason they should tell the customer rather than leave them hanging for months after quoting for the with, I was then what FB was all about. Ignorant, demanding and a lazy cunt who couldn't do my own work.

The more worrying fact in all this is that “tradespeople” are a quickly becoming a thing of the past.

In my day when you finished school you went off to serve your time as a carpenter, Electrican or whatever, now obviously there was still people who went into other employment and industries but I can’t see too many 17/18 year olds opting for a trade nowadays when leaving school.

It’s all Tick tock this and Instagram that and it’s very hard to disagree with 17/18 year olds these days when they can make money from literally their bedroom now instead of going out to a site and putting in the hours and manual labour involved in that kind of work.

The price off all building material is gone mad,especially eletrical stuff.Just price paint and see how expensive its gone. Im in this buisness myself for years now.But not all tradesmen are robbing people,most are.

You could allow for the fact that the material he would need has doubled but his labour rate would, or should have only increased in line with inflation. I guess you should try to get a couple more quotes to see what is actually going on in the market.

Yes, very short sighted as tougher times are here, due to get worse for the foreseeable...with less disposable income in the population, people will be less inclined to have jobs done that aren't absolutely necessary!

We’ve just had a new gas boiler fitted today and after little Tabby did some ‘shopping around’ we had it done for more than 600 less than the other quotes I had.

Good morning and thank you all for your posts, tips and even offers.

I hear yous all that materials have gone up in price but that still doesn't explain this sky high quote. And yes I will get more quotes in. Thought I had found in him a decent enough electrician so that I don't have to shop around; he did plenty of work for me before and always charged reasonably.

Anyhow I got a recommendation of a reliable non-fab source yesterday and that recommendation just sounds like the guy I'm looking for.

A funny coincidence that after all I posted yesterday I found a contractor through the same business FB page who was able to provide an in depth quote for the work I need done including the material spec which I could Google and they are asking £730 for the job that was quoted at £600 by the other company earlier in the year and revised to £1600 at the start of the week.

So the question now is why would one company feel the need to increase the price by 150% when the materials are only costing £250?

Supply and demand is one thing. Ripping the arse out of your customers is the new bridge burning.

Massive housing shortage in Ireland. Mortgage rates going up and talk of a ‘crash’. Can’t see it tbh, back to the point made earlier, supply and demand, and that will keep house / building prices fairly stable in Ireland….which means the tradespeople are unlikely to see ‘hard times’.

My advice, get tradespeople you trust and pay them on time, their bills are only going one way sadly

Curious how much they quoted you for your kitchen OP? I was a bit staggered here being told the work done in our kitchen was €1800.. it's a tiny kitchen and not even finished. We've been told people take the piss here but not had much experience.
