Fear of football crowds

For personal reasons, I have extremely clear memories of several football crowd disasters: Ibrox Park in 1971; Bradford in 1985; and Hillsborough Stadium in 1989.

There was also Heysel in Belgium.

I have just read that there may be hundreds of dead and injured at a football stadium on the island of Java, Indonesia.

Football crowds, especially when panicked are exceptionally dangerous phenomena, as is again the case on Java.

The death toll is now close to two hundred and will probably exceed that; crowds, especially at mass sporting events are very unpredictable and behave completely irrationally, as has been the case there in the Far East.
