From the lounge

For me it’s teaching . One of my teachers was hugely inspirational and helped shape my career. For struggling families the teachers can end up doing bits of work which combine psychology and social work . Some do go into the career for the work life balance but some are in it to inspire and there needs to be a better trajectory for those in my opinion

Respect is given and earned.You decide who deserves respect in your life. If the people in your life are not demonstrating actions that warrant respect from you then why would they deserve respect? I know what I deem as respectful and I act on that. Some people that are in authority are just plain wrong. I do not respect them I tolerate them as a matter of getting on with things. They do things that let me see are not nice people and hurt others. As for people in jobs that deserve respect I go back to, respect is earned an given no matter what your "status" is. That be if you are in high authority or if you are someone that has come on hard times. Its not the clothes we wear it's what's inside that counts in my opinion! (Dark)

I am not particularly talking about individuals . It’s more whether a career is nurtured in a particular society given its potential societal impact . One’s experience of being a teacher or a Garda might be very different between countries because of the cultural and governmental perception of it

Sorry don’t agree with you on that. I had a Maths teacher who was long passed it. Absolutely ruined people with his lack of ability to teach, several of his classes pupils got parents to sign petitions to have him removed as he simply couldn’t teach. But to no avail, ended up getting a few crash courses in 3rd year from another teacher in the class towards the end of the year. Man ruined so many peoples future prospects by not being able to teach. Yet he was kept in a job, respect my ….

Unfortunately you can't sack civil servants in this country, it could be a game changer. If it's any consolation the worst teachers go on and become politicians (of course they hold on to their teaching job preventing the position to be filled with a devoted teacher - only in Ireland!).

100% agree with this. There are professions that may deserve more money and some that get too much however respect is an individual thing that's earned

Parents with what they have to do for children. Especially if children have special needs or they see the problem but are not believed.

Years ago if you wanted to keep a child with special needs people would be disrespectful asking why you didn't lock them up or why you bring them outside they are so ugly.

Even sometimes the gave you that option at brith.

We live in better times but parents still have a fighting battle being judged for parenting skills or lack of them. Walk in another person's shoes before you judge them. We don't get a instruction book when baby is born.

Teaching is more regulated now than it ever was. You can bring a complaint to the teaching council and it has to be investigated. Unfortunately education is a closed shop of you scratch my back, I scratch yours. Incompetent people (like most in the public service) get promoted above people who actually give a shit.

Have to agree with you there. You receive training for most jobs, but parenting is something you "expected" to know about

For some people, they are not much more than kids themselves with no support from family.

Your expected to know it all or bluff your way through.

After parents, anyone who looks after / minds kids - it's a nightmare with headaches of regulation if your working for a provider, poor pay, very little gratitude.

Next are all the people who work in youth provision services. Contracts are often dubious and the level of hostilities that some put up with is a night mare. Your not a social worker but expected to fix the mess for a broken system that the state throws money at,

Honest building workers , the winters here are a lot longer than the Summer's, and l think people should respect them simply because if it's pouring rain a Carpenter has kept you dry , if you have anything timber in your house a carpenter has done it , a blocklayer has built your house , a plasterer has made your house ready for the painter , a Plummer has everything working when you need it ,an electrician has you just flicking the switch, so don't ever think just because those that are in the trades are people that don't contribute..they do and should be respected.

Cleaners, especially of toilets in public facilities are insufficiently appreciated. Most are female and on minimum wage with poor working conditions, obviously and with a minimum of other employment benefits.

I personally make a point of commenting on the cleanliness of the facility and what a good job they are doing.

The condition that some users leave the toilets in is appalling.

Cleaners provide a vital service; more users should thank them, in person.
