Respecting the dead

From the lounge .

Do you think this isn’t for discussion ?

It’s something that has to be done. Especially if they’re recently deceased ?

Obviously there ll always be exceptions (such as jimmy saville) but what if it’s someone whose actions , role or rhetoric you disagreed with when alive ?

If you’re having private conversations with your friends or family and not tweeting , and there is no chance you ll hurt the grieving family , should you refrain from voicing your views on that person out of respecting the dead ?

I wouldn't respect a person dead any more than I respected them alive... having said that I would respect the feelings of anyone grieving from a recent loss

I think there is a big difference between being consistent in your view of someone before and after death and being disrespectful towards them.

I really dislike when people bend over backwards to compliment someone in death that they either knew nothing of or actively disliked in life.

Saying all that there is common sense and compassion that people should show in all aspects of life that are sadly absent, especially in the online world

You can't say "you must respect the dead" and then qualify it with "there are exceptions". My exceptions could be very different to yours.

Personally, in not sure that dying is the great get out card that people suggest. If you were a cunt while alive, you're no less of a cunt when you're dead.

Polishing turds is a fools errand.

There is always a matter of taste though.

I'm fascinated though by some of the anti imperialist rhetoric I've heard over the last few days from people who didn't have a single word to say about imperialism over the last 50 years.

I don’t think undeserved respect should be a given but I also don’t think that celebrating a death is the classiest move.

If you had little/no respect for the person that died, I think that not participating in the narrative around that persons death says more than celebrating it.

If you were not a nice person when alive dying didn’t change that but you were still someone’s child farther mother brother sister and they have feelings if you have nothing good to say about the deceased just say nothing at all .

Everyone is responsible for their own doings. Death isn't turning anyone into a saint, it also doesn't cancel out your wrongdoings, sins or crimes. Imagine you couldn't discuss a person's conduct anymore after he/she deceases. As McCarthy says you'd cancel out all history.
